Occasionally, you might notice a negative balance in your Kernel wallet or see a buy order that hasn't moved. This usually happens when a buy order is placed for an amount higher than the cleared cash currently in your wallet.
What is an unfunded order?
An unfunded order occurs when you create an order to buy a fund, but your Kernel wallet doesn't have the cash to pay for it yet.
Because we only process fund orders once the money is cleared in your wallet, these orders will sit as "Awaiting payment" until you top up. Your wallet balance will show a negative figure to reflect the funding gap. This is simply the amount of cash you still need to deposit to allow the transaction to proceed.
Why is my balance negative?
The most common reasons for seeing a negative balance include:
Waiting for a bank transfer: You have placed an order, but your manual bank transfer hasn't arrived in your Kernel wallet yet.
Accidental duplicate orders: You may have accidentally placed the same order twice. For example, if you intended to buy $500 of a fund but clicked twice, the second $500 order will stay "Awaiting payment" and show as a negative balance until it is either funded or cancelled.
How are multiple unfunded orders processed?
If you have several "Awaiting payment" fund buy orders, they are processed in the order they were placed.
The system does not process them in size order as money comes into the wallet. For example, if you have a $1,000 order followed by a $50 order, the $50 order will not process until the $1,000 order has been fully funded and cleared. If you want a smaller order to go through first, you will need to cancel the larger order ahead of it.
How do I clear a negative wallet balance?
If you have an order "Awaiting payment" that you didn't mean to place, or you simply want to clear a negative balance without depositing more cash, you can easily cancel the buy order:
Log in to your Kernel account and go to the Activity tab.
Find the Awaiting payment transaction you wish to remove.
Click on the transaction to open the details.
Select Cancel Transaction.
Confirm by clicking Cancel transaction again.
