How do I cancel my KiwiSaver transfer to Kernel?

Written by Alison Perkins

Decided to stay put? If you’ve recently applied to move your KiwiSaver to Kernel but have changed your mind, here is how to stop the process.

1. Contact your current provider immediately

You’ll need to contact your current KiwiSaver provider and ask them to cancel the transfer to Kernel.

Kernel is not able to cancel or block an incoming KiwiSaver transfer from our side. We can only receive the funds once your current provider sends them.

2. If the funds have already arrived at Kernel

If the transfer has already been completed and your balance is showing in your Kernel account, don’t worry, you aren't locked in. However, the process must now be treated as a new transfer.

To move your funds back to your previous provider:

  • Get in touch with them: Let them know you’d like to transfer your KiwiSaver back from Kernel.

  • They will initiate the request: They will send us a transfer request, and we will release the funds back to them.

A note on timing

KiwiSaver transfers typically take about two weeks to process from start to finish. If your funds have to travel to Kernel and then back again, the total round trip could take up to four weeks.
