What is the Power Query connector?

ESG reporting doesn't end when data is collected. It gets analysed, modelled, and shared in spreadsheets and dashboards, often by teams who live in Microsoft tools. Keeping that analysis up to date has traditionally meant repeated manual exports every time figures change.

With the new KEY ESG connector, you can connect directly to your platform data using Power Query, so your spreadsheets and dashboards always reflect the latest figures without any manual steps.

This is particularly useful if you're building custom ESG dashboards in Power BI, running portfolio-level analysis across multiple fund years in Excel, or sharing reporting outputs with stakeholders who work primarily in Microsoft tools.

Before you begin

Before setting up the connector, make sure:

  • You have Microsoft Excel (with Power Query support) or Microsoft Power BI installed

  • You are signed into KEY ESG using a Microsoft organisational account. If you log in via email and password rather than Microsoft, you will need to contact our support team at support@keyesg.com who can help get your Microsoft account set up correctly before the connector can be enabled.

  • You have access to the Connectors section in KEY ESG (if you see a "Contact us to enable" label on the connector cards, clicking the label will open a pre-filled email to our support team who can get you activated)

Setting up the connector

Step 1: Enable the connector in KEY ESG

  1. Log into your KEY ESG account

  2. Navigate to Connectors in the left-hand menu

  3. Select the Analytics & BI tab

4. Click Configure on the connector you want to set up (Excel or Power BI β€” the process is the same for both)

5. On the configuration page, click Enable

Enabling the connector links your Microsoft account to your KEY ESG account. This is a one-time action and stays enabled until you choose to disable it.

Note: If you are not signed into KEY ESG via a Microsoft account, you will see a warning at this step and the Enable button will not be available. Please contact our support team at support@keyesg.com who can help get your Microsoft account set up correctly.

Step 2: Copy your API Endpoint url

Once enabled, Step 2 will become active and an instructions panel will appear below.

Follow the Desktop or Web tab shown in the instructions panel: this will guide you through selecting your reporting year, copying your API endpoint URL, and completing the connection in Excel or Power BI.

If you are a company user: Select the reporting year you want to pull data for from the dropdown. Each year has a unique URL, if you need data for multiple years, you will need to repeat the setup process with a different year selected each time.

If you are a fund manager: You will receive a single URL that covers all years, no year selection is needed.

Copy the API endpoint URL using the copy button on the right.

Refreshing your data

Once the connector is set up, you can refresh your data at any time to pull the latest figures from KEY ESG.

  1. In Power BI, click Refresh in the Home ribbon.

  2. In Excel, go to Data > Refresh All.

FAQs

Does this work on a Mac or in the browser?
The connector works in the browser on any operating system, and also on the Windows desktop app. The Mac desktop app is not currently supported.

Why can I see the connector cards but not configure them?
Simply click the 'Contact us to enable' label β€” this will open a pre-filled email to our support team who can get you activated.

I'm a company user, do I need to repeat this process for each year?
Yes. Each reporting year has a unique API URL. To pull data for multiple years, repeat the setup process from Step 2, selecting a different year each time.

The Enable button is greyed out, what do I do?
Please contact our support team at support@keyesg.com who can help get your Microsoft account set up correctly.

My data isn't refreshing, what should I check?
Make sure you are still authenticated with the same Microsoft account used during setup. If your Microsoft session has expired, Power Query may prompt you to sign in again.
