What is the KEY ESG MCP connector?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect directly to external platforms and query live data. The KEY ESG MCP connector gives AI tools read access to your ESG data, so you can ask questions and get accurate, real-time answers without exporting anything.

Once connected, your AI assistant can pull metrics, targets, action plans, policies, and portfolio performance directly from KEY ESG, and use them to answer questions, draft reports, or complete questionnaires on your behalf.

The underlying tools are production-ready and fully secured, backed by the same data that powers the KEY ESG platform. We are making it available in beta because we want to continue testing it against real-world workflows and edge cases before we consider it fully complete. We will update this article as the connector evolves.

Before you begin

You will need:

  • A KEY ESG account

  • An AI tool that supports MCP, Claude (claude.ai), ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Mistral, Cursor and soon Microsoft Copilot. check your AI tool's documentation for setup guidance (you need to have admin access on the tool to be able to connect it to KEY ESG)

  • The connector activated on your account, see Step 1 below

Setting up the connector

Step 1: Open the setup instructions

  1. Log into your KEY ESG account

  2. Navigate to Connectors in the left-hand menu

  3. Select the AI tab

  4. Click View setup instructions on the KEY ESG MCP card

The setup instructions page will walk you through connecting your KEY ESG account to your AI tool using Auth0 authentication.

What data the connector can access

Once connected, your AI assistant can query the following from your KEY ESG account:

  • ESG metrics: all metrics tracked for a given year, filterable by GHG scope (Scope 1, 2, 3) or ESG pillar (Environmental, Social, Governance)

  • Metric values: calculated values for specific metrics, at company or portfolio level, including coverage data showing which companies have or are missing data (portfolio-level tools available to fund managers only)

  • Portfolio summary: portfolio composition, active frameworks, reporting year, currency, and sector (fund managers only)

  • Funds: a list of funds with portfolio company counts per reporting year (fund managers only)

  • Targets: ESG targets with current progress, baseline values, target years, and status (on track, at risk, achieved, or missed)

  • Action plans: current improvement initiatives with owner, status, and due date, filterable by ESG pillar

  • Policies: ESG policies with type, review date, and a direct link to download the policy document

The connector is read-only, it cannot make changes to your KEY ESG account or data.

FAQs

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and data sources. It works like a structured interface that AI tools already know how to use, meaning any MCP-compatible AI assistant can query KEY ESG without any custom development.

Which AI tools does this work with?

KEY ESG support: Claude (claude.ai), ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Mistral, Cursor and soon Microsoft Copilot. Check your AI tool's documentation for MCP connection guidance.

Is my data secure?

Yes. The connector uses Auth0 for authentication, so your KEY ESG credentials are never shared with the AI tool directly. Access is scoped to your organisation's data only, and the connector is read-only
