Start here — what are you seeing?
Klarify needs your microphone to record sessions and dictations. Your browser controls that permission — Klarify can ask for it, but only you can grant it. Find your situation below; most fixes take under a minute.
A pop-up is asking to use your microphone → section 1
You clicked "Enable microphone" but no pop-up appeared (or Klarify says access is blocked) → section 2
Safari asks for permission every time you record → section 3
Klarify says no microphone was found → section 4
None of that helped → section 5
1. Allow the pop-up
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc
The pop-up appears in the top-left corner of the browser window, next to the address bar: "app.klarify.ca wants to — Use available microphones."
Choose "Allow while visiting the site." We strongly recommend this option: it saves the permission, so you're never asked again on this computer.
"Allow this time" works for today, but the browser will ask again on every visit.
"Never allow" blocks Klarify. If you clicked it by accident, jump to section 2.
If you closed the pop-up by accident, click Enable microphone in the Klarify recorder and it will appear again.
Safari (Mac)
Safari's prompt drops down from the address bar: "klarify.ca" Would Like to Access the Microphone. Click Allow.
Safari only remembers this until you close the tab or stop recording for a few minutes, so it asks again next time. To stop that, see section 3.
Firefox
Firefox shows a small panel anchored to a microphone icon at the top left of the address bar. Tick "Remember this decision", then click Allow — without the checkbox, Firefox asks again every visit.
2. No pop-up? Set it in Site settings
If no pop-up appears no matter what you click, your browser has most likely saved a "Block" decision — blocked sites are never re-asked. Fix it in the site's settings: find Microphone and change it from Ask or Block to Allow. Setting it to Allow also means you'll never need the pop-up again.
Chrome, Brave, Arc
Click the site-controls icon on the left side of the address bar (a sliders icon, a ⓘ, or a padlock, depending on version).
If you see a Microphone toggle right there, switch it on. Otherwise click Site settings.
Set Microphone to Allow.
Back in the Klarify tab, click Reload when the browser offers it (or refresh the page).
Can't find the icon? Paste chrome://settings/content/microphone into the address bar, remove the Klarify entry under "Not allowed" or set it to Allow, then reload Klarify.
Edge
Click the padlock in the address bar → Permissions for this site → set Microphone to Allow → reload. Or paste edge://settings/content/microphone into the address bar.
Safari (Mac)
With Klarify open, choose Safari → Settings → Websites → Microphone and set app.klarify.ca to Allow, then reload. Section 3 walks through it step by step.
Firefox
Click the permissions icon (often a crossed-out microphone) on the left side of the address bar.
Click the X next to "Use the Microphone: Blocked".
Reload the page — when the prompt appears, tick Remember this decision and click Allow.
3. Safari keeps asking every time
Safari has no "always allow" button in its prompt. Clicking Allow only lasts for the current page. To make it permanent, set Klarify to Allow in Safari's website settings:
In Safari, open the Safari menu and choose Settings… (or press ⌘ ,).
Click the Websites tab.
In the left sidebar, choose Microphone.
Find app.klarify.ca under "Currently Open Websites" and change the drop-down from Ask to Allow.
Close Settings and reload Klarify. Safari will not ask again the next time you record.
If Klarify is not listed, open Klarify in a tab first, then come back. Share across devices syncs this choice to your other Macs signed in to the same iCloud account.
Skip Safari → Settings for app.klarify.ca… in the menu bar: it is often greyed out, and when it opens it has no Microphone row.
4. Your computer is blocking the browser
If the site permission is set to Allow but Klarify still says no microphone was found, reload the page once. If that does not help, your operating system is blocking the browser itself.
On a Mac
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
Turn on the switch next to your browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge…).
Fully quit the browser (⌘Q) and reopen it — the change applies only after a restart.
On Windows
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone, and make sure Let desktop apps access your microphone is also on.
Close and reopen the browser.
5. Still stuck? Troubleshooting checklist
Test the microphone elsewhere. Record a few seconds in Voice Memos (Mac) or Sound Recorder (Windows). If nothing records there, it's a hardware or OS issue.
Check the input device. Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input — speak and watch the level meter. Windows: Settings → System → Sound → Input.
Bluetooth headsets: make sure it's connected and charged, or switch to the built-in microphone in Klarify's microphone picker.
External mics: unplug and replug, then click Check again in Klarify.
Restart the browser, then the computer.
Using Klarify inside another app's browser (a link opened inside Outlook or Teams)? Open Klarify in a full browser like Chrome instead.
