Klarify gives you five ways to capture your therapy sessions. This guide walks you through each method step by step.
In the recording modal, before your first recording, do two things:
Test your microphone — click the "Test Microphone" button when setting up a new session.
Watch the audio waveforms — during recording, you'll see waveforms on screen. If they move when you speak, audio is being captured. If they stay flat, stop immediately and troubleshoot.

Method 1: Record Virtual Sessions
Best for: Zoom, Google Meet, Jane, Telus, Layla, Owl, Doxy, and other browser-based video platforms.
Steps
Join your video call on the platform you're using.
Open Klarify in a new browser tab.
Click "Record Virtual Session".
Assign a client. If this is your first session with a client on Klarify, skip this step.
Click "Start Recording".
Select your video call from the dropdown tab options.
Click "Share".
During your session, you should see a banner near the top of your browser (if you chose to share a Browser Tab). Do not press "Stop sharing" — this is needed to receive audio from your virtual session. If you press it or the banner disappears, Klarify will pause recording.
Ending the Recording
Go back to the Klarify tab.
Click the pause button.
Click "Next" or "Save & Finish".
If you see "Next," you'll need to assign the session to a client or create a new client.
For couples or group sessions, click "Group" after pressing "Create New."
After assigning the client, click "Save & Finish".
Important Tips
Use Chrome, not Safari. Safari has major limitations with audio recording.
Use the browser version of Zoom or Teams. See this help article on how to use Zoom in the browser.
Selecting "Window" instead of "Entire Screen" or "Tab" often causes problems, avoid it.
Recording Zoom Sessions
Zoom has a few extra options depending on your setup:
Option 1: Zoom in Chrome Browser (Recommended) Join your Zoom call using Chrome instead of the Zoom desktop app. Then use "Record Virtual Session" and select the Zoom tab. If you don't see the "Join from your browser" link, read this help article.
Option 2: Share Entire Screen On Windows and newer macOS/Chrome, you can share your entire screen with system audio, and Klarify will pick up your Zoom call seamlessly.
Option 3: Use a Second Device On older Macs that don't support system audio sharing:
Use your phone as an "in-person" recorder placed next to your computer, or
Use your computer as an "in-person" recorder while running Zoom on your phone.
The recording device must hear both voices through speakers — headphones won't work for this method.
Option 4: Upload a Zoom Recording Record your session using Zoom's built-in recording feature, then upload the file to Klarify using the "Upload Recording" button (see Method 4 below).
Method 2: Record In-Person Sessions
Best for: Face-to-face sessions in your office.
On a Computer
Visit the Klarify website.
Click "Record In-Person".
Assign a client. If this is your first session with a client on Klarify, skip this step.
Press "Start Recording". Place your computer close to you and your client.
Do not turn the screen off or let the computer go to sleep. This will stop the recording.
When done, click the pause button, then "Next" or "Save & Finish".
Assign the session to a client and press "Save".
On a Phone or Tablet
Visit the Klarify website, no app download needed.
Place the device between you and your client.
Tap "Record In-Person".
Do not turn the screen off or switch away from the Klarify recording screen. This will stop the recording.
When done, tap the stop button, then "Finish".
Assign the session to a client.
Tap "Save".
Important Tips
Your screen must stay on. If your phone screen locks or your computer goes to sleep, the recording stops immediately. Adjust your auto-sleep settings before your session (see Recording Problems).
On iPhone, stay on the Klarify website. Switching apps or browser tabs stops the recording.
You can place your phone face down on the table if you're concerned about clients seeing the screen — just keep the screen on.
Position your device close enough to pick up both voices clearly.
Method 3: Dictate a Summary
Best for: When clients don't consent to recording, or when you prefer to summarize verbally after a session.
Steps
After your session ends, click "Dictate a Summary".
Speak your session notes into your device.
Klarify transcribes and structures your notes automatically.
Tips
Speak clearly and at a normal pace.
Include the key points you want in your clinical notes.
You can dictate immediately after a session or later in the day.
Works on any device with a microphone.
Method 4: Upload a Recording
Best for: When you already have an audio or video file from another source (including Zoom's built-in recordings).
Steps
Click "Upload Recording".
Select your audio or video file.
Klarify processes it and generates your notes.
Supported formats: MP3, MP4, WAV, M4A, and most common audio/video formats.
Common Issues
Problem | Solution |
Upload gets stuck or fails | Usually caused by a weak internet connection. Refresh the page and click "Retry Upload" from the same device you started on. |
File won't upload | Check that your file is in a supported format. Very large files may take longer to process. |
Method 5: Upload Text
Best for: When you've already typed notes somewhere else and want Klarify to format them.
Steps
Click "Upload Text".
Paste your typed notes into the text box.
Klarify transforms them into professional clinical documentation.
Recording Phone Calls
You cannot directly record traditional phone calls — iOS and Android block this for privacy reasons.
Workarounds:
Speaker method: Put your phone on speaker and use a separate device (laptop or second phone) to record the session as an in-person recording.
Switch to a video call: Ask clients to call you via Google Meet or Zoom on your computer instead. Then use the "Record Virtual Session" method.
