This guide walks school administrators through the complete PowerSchool integration process for Kognity. PowerSchool is a Student Information System (SIS), and the integration is used to roster your classes and students into Kognity automatically.
There are two parts: first, starting the integration in Edlink using the link provided by Kognity's team; then installing and configuring the Edlink plugin inside PowerSchool.
Before You Begin
You will need PowerSchool Administrator rights. The process involves installing and configuring a plugin, which requires administrator access.
A note on how your users will sign in. PowerSchool handles rostering, but it does not provide single sign-on. For your teachers and students to log in without passwords, three things need to be true:
All teachers and students use Google Workspace accounts
Those same email addresses are recorded in PowerSchool for every user
Kognity is approved as an application in your Google Admin console
If all three apply, everyone signs in with Google and no passwords are needed. If not, rostered users will be prompted to create a password the first time they log in.
What this integration does and doesn't do. Because PowerSchool is an SIS rather than a learning management system, the integration covers rostering only.
Assignment and grade passback are not supported. If your school also uses an LMS such as Canvas, Schoology or Google Classroom, that may be a better option, as those integrations provide rostering, single sign-on and assignment sync together.
Part 1: Start the Integration in Edlink
Kognity's team will send you a personalised integration link. Always begin from that link, as it is what connects your PowerSchool source to Kognity specifically.
1. Open the integration link
Open the link sent by Kognity (it will look something like https://ed.link/integrate/abc456789-efg456-123456 — this is just an example).
2. Create your Edlink account
If you have connected an app to Edlink before, log in with your existing account. Otherwise, create a new one.
3. Select PowerSchool as your data source
Choose PowerSchool from the list of available data sources.
4. Choose your data storage region
Select the region where you would like your data to be stored. Choose the one closest to your school's location.
5. Enter your PowerSchool URL
Type in your school's PowerSchool URL.
Part 2: Install the Edlink Plugin in PowerSchool
1. Download the plugin
Download the PowerSchool plugin from the integration page.
2. Open the PowerSchool Plugin Installation Page
Navigate to the Plugin Installation Page in PowerSchool.
3. Upload and install the plugin
Click Choose File, select the plugin you just downloaded, then click Install.
4. Enable the plugin
Navigate to the PowerSchool Plugin Configuration Page and enable the plugin.
Part 3: Enter the OAuth Client ID and Secret
1. Open the plugin configuration
On the PowerSchool Plugin Configuration Page, click Edlink PowerQueries, then click Data Provider Configuration.
2. Copy the Client ID and Client Secret
Find the Client ID and Client Secret on the configuration page and enter them into the integration flow in Edlink.
3. Set the access level
Under Additional Configuration for Access Level for v1 APIs, select Full Access.
Part 4: Complete the Integration
1. Select your timezone
Choose the timezone your school or district is located in.
2. Validate
Click Validate Configuration, then click Continue Setup once your configuration has been validated.
Your PowerSchool source is now connected to Edlink. Your data will sync within 24 hours, so nothing will appear immediately.
How Your Teachers and Students Sign In
Once rostering is complete, your users should go to app.kognity.com and click Sign in with Google, rather than entering their email address in the standard login form.
This is worth sharing with your teachers and students in advance. Typing an email into the standard login field will prompt them for a password they do not have, since their access comes through their Google Workspace account.
If users aren't able to sign in with Google, check that Kognity has been approved as an application in your Google Admin console. Without that approval, Google sign-in won't work even when email addresses match.
What Happens Next?
Once the connection is live, let us know at support@kognity.com. We will then set up the correct content rules on our end to make sure the right Kognity subjects are linked to your classes.
Depending on the complexity of your integration, we may ask you to fill out our Content Mapping Template, with the classes and subjects you'd like to connect with Kognity. To make a copy, simply click Use Template, or go to File > Make a Copy. Once completed, just send it back to us and we'll take it from there!
