Note: This article references IB DP Exam-Style Question (ESQ) assignments, which are known as Test Practice Questions for IGCSE.
Kognity's Exam-Style Questions are meticulously written by examiners and expert teachers to authentically mimic the questions students will encounter in their actual examinations. These questions are accompanied by a comprehensive mark scheme, an example answer, and valuable advice for students.
Important: Students can only see exam-style questions that you have made available to them. There are two ways to do this:
Assign questions in an Exam-Style Question assignment. Once the assignment is sent, those questions also stay available for students to practise again.
Unlock questions for self-study in the ESQ library, so students can practise them on their own without an assignment.
Any questions you haven't assigned or unlocked stay hidden. This means you can keep them back for future assignments, mock exams, or assessments.
Why Hide Mark Schemes?
Hiding mark schemes lets you send questions that students have never seen the answers to. This supports effective exam preparation and accurate summative assessment.
For assignments, you can choose to send just the questions, without the answers and mark scheme being available straight away. For self-study questions, you decide whether students can check the mark scheme after they submit an attempt.
How to Hide Mark Schemes for ESQ Assignments
Follow these steps to control mark scheme visibility:
Create Your ESQ Assignment: Select the questions you want to send. When you're ready, click 'Assign' at the bottom right of the page.
Set the Mark scheme access according to your preference. By default, the mark scheme is locked.
You can choose to:
Allow access during the assignment, so students can see the mark scheme and example answer while they work.
Unlock manually, which keeps the mark scheme hidden until you unlock it yourself.
Unlock automatically after the deadline, which releases the mark scheme once the deadline passes.
Tip: If you choose to unlock automatically after the deadline, the mark scheme is released for you, so you won't see a manual unlock option.
Send or schedule your assignment: Finalise your settings, then send or schedule the assignment.
Students receive an email notification about the assignment.
They receive a separate email notification when the mark scheme is unlocked.
Unlocking questions and mark schemes for self-study
In the exam-style questions library, you can choose which questions students can practise on their own, and whether they can see the mark scheme after they submit an answer.
How to update questions
Tick the box next to each question you want to update. You can select several questions at once.
Use the bar at the bottom of the page:
Hide/show: choose Visible for students to unlock the questions for self-study, or Hidden for students to keep them locked.
Mark scheme: choose Available after submission to let students view the mark scheme once they submit an attempt, or Not available to keep it hidden.
What the icons mean
Each question row shows its current status:
Eye (green): the question is visible to students for self-study. A grey eye means it's hidden.
Clipboard: shows whether students can see the mark scheme. A grey clipboard means the mark scheme is hidden from students until you turn it on.
Good to know:
Questions you've already assigned automatically become visible for self-study, so students can practise them again.
Mark schemes are hidden by default. Students only see a mark scheme after submitting if you've set it to Available after submission.
Questions you keep hidden stay unseen, so you can save them for future assignments, mock exams or assessments.
