You can absolutely insure a pet that’s been adopted or brought to the UK from another country with Lassie.
When can cover start? ⏳
You can take out insurance before your pet arrives — but the policy can only start once your pet is in the UK.
Make sure your policy start date is set to the day your pet moves in with you (or later). Standard waiting periods apply.
Do I need a vet certificate? 🩺
You don’t need a veterinary certificate just because your pet is from abroad.
When signing up, we’ll ask you to select a breed.
If you’ve adopted a mixed breed and you’re unsure, It doesn’t need to be exact. What matters most is choosing a breed that best matches your pet’s size and build.
If you’re unsure, just reach out via chat or email and send us a photo. We’ll help you choose.
Important: Conditions from abroad
There are a few things we can’t cover.
Tests for Mediterranean (travel-related) diseases
Treatment for Mediterranean diseases isn’t covered
Any pre-existing conditions (illnesses or injuries your pet already had before cover started) aren’t covered
This is because we can’t insure conditions that may have developed before your policy began.
Importing responsibly 📋
If you’re bringing a pet into the UK, it’s your responsibility to follow all relevant laws and regulations — including vaccination, microchipping and travel requirements.
When travelling to and from the UK and the EU, you must follow the conditions of the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS).
