Installation Summary

Installation Steps

Step 0: Number the machines in the location

Before proceeding, it is recommended that you assign numbers and labels to each machines in the laundry room/building.

Step 1: Turn Machine Power OFF

It is always recommended to power the machine off before install the card readers.

Step 2: Number the reader using the DIP switches

In order to configure a Card Reader to report as a specific Washer or Dryer number, you need to set the reader's DIP Switches to specific positions. These DIP Switches ONLY affect what the reader will display as for it's machine type (Washer/Dryer) and it's machine number:

Review our: Reader DIP Switch settings article for details on how to set the Card Reader's Machine Type, and Reader Number.

You need to do this BEFORE mounting the Card Readers onto the machines, as accessing the back of the card reader is required.

Step 3: Remove the Coin Drop (For Card-Only Installs)

The Card Reader will be mounted in the area where the Coin Drop has been removed.

Step 4: Card Reader Power and Signal Connections

Latest Generation Harness - Part #02-06-51B (click to expand)

If you have the latest generation harness, 02-06-51B, simply plug the connectors to the edge of the green coin board inside the dryer, removing any existing screw terminal connectors that might be present:

  • Card ONLY installations

    • The single WHITE wire coin connector should connect to Coin1 terminal

    • Ensure that the RED/BLUE wire connector plugs into the DC Out terminal.

  • Hybrid (Coin + Card) installations

    • The pulse signal connector (WHITE wire) should connect to the available Coin Input (usually Coin2 terminal as Coin1 is likely in use by the machine's Coin Drop)

    • Ensure that the power connector (RED/BLUE wires) plugs into the DC Out header.

Older Generation Harness - Part #02-06-51 (click to expand)

The older generation harness, 02-06-51, has three bare wires which will need to be connected to the machine's control board, in the spots labeled as GND(COM), 9V, and Coin.

There are two variants of coin board: with screw terminals and without screw terminals.

In either variant, the connections between the harness and the coin board should be as follows:

  • RED wire <---> 9V

  • BLUE wire <---> GND (ground)

  • WHITE wire <----> Coin1 (or Coin2 for Hybrid installs)

Variant #1: Boards with screw terminals (older generation harness)

Use the connectors with screw terminal to make the connections as per below. In some cases the dryer may not have the connector shown on the left, and instead have the 2-pin connector that fits all the way on the right side of the board. This 2-pin connector has the same 9V and GND, so you can use as another option for power.

Variant 2: Boards without screw terminals (older generation harness)

You will have to splice the three wires to the existing cable harness as shown:

The end result should look like this:

For Hybrid (Coin + Card) Installs:
For hybrid installs the coin drop will likely be using the Coin1 input;
so you'll want to connect our card reader to the Coin2 input instead

Step 5: Mount the Reader

Card-Only Installations (click to expand)

For Card Only installs, the Card Reader mounts in the same location where the Coin-Drop has been removed.

For Stack Dryers specifically, the Left side and Right side mounting plates are different:

For single pocket dryers that receive the following 2 piece mounting backplate:

The bottom piece is used to hook the bottom of the backplate to the opening on the machine, and the top 2 studs secure to the machine with the mounting nuts:

Hybrid (Coin + Card) Installations (click to expand)

For Hybrid Coin + Card installs, custom holes will need to be drilled into the machine, and the reader should be mounted in an area where the reader wiring harness can be pass through to the inside of the machine.

For examples of Hybrid Coin + Card installations, review our Hybrid (Coin + Card) Installation - Card Reader Mounting Guide

Step 6: Activate the Card Reader

Proceed to secure the reader to the machine and then Activate the card reader using the Activation Card for this specific location:

Note: you MUST use the Activation Card for THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION,
or else the card reader will not appear on the LaundroPortal for this location.

This will activate the reader and programs the reader with the location's specific Support and Location IDs.

The Card Reader will then automatically connect to VAC01's wireless network and once connected, will be visible on the LaundroPortal where you can configure it's vend prices.

Step 7: Configuring Machine Side settings

There are 2 pricing structures that are commonly used on Dryers:

  1. Top Off pricing - The machine's vend price, and the amount of time the Dryer adds, remains exactly the same no matter if you're starting the machine from an idle state, or adding additional time to a machine that's already running an active cycle.

  2. Full Cycle pricing - The machine's vend price and amount of time the Dryer starts with, is different than the cost. and amount of top off time the dryer adds, to a cycle that's currently active.

Depending on the pricing structure you're trying to achieve, you will adjust the machine side settings in a slightly different manor

Top Off Pricing: remains the same regardless of cycle state (click to expand)

Machine Side Settings

This is the simplest setup as the machine will always cost the same and always add the same amount of dry time.

There are 3 machine side settings that need to be configured for this pricing structure. The Machine's;

  • "Time per Coin" setting = the amount of dry time the machine adds

  • "Price on All Programs" setting = the vend price of the machine

  • "Set Coin Value 1" setting = the vend price of the machine

Card Reader Settings

The Card Reader will then be configured to match the settings that are being used by the machine.

There are 2 different Card Reader Control Types that can be used on these machines, and based on which reader Control Type is being used, the Card Reader settings that need to be configured will be slightly different.

Below is a screenshot showing the Card Reader's settings, when the reader is using the default Control Type "Coin Dryer, Normally Closed (NC) [04)".

This is a 'Top Off' pricing only Control Type, where every time the card reader is tapped it will charge the same amount.

Example - tapping the Card Reader once will charge $0.5 which should provide 10 minutes of dry time. Tapping the Card Reader twice will charge $1 (total) and should provide 20 minutes of dry time (total):

With the "Coin Dryer, Normally Closed (NC) [04)" Control Type selected,

you'll need to match the following machine/reader settings:

  • The Machine's "Time per Coin" setting = The Card Reader's "Time Unit (mins)" setting

  • The Machine's Vend Price ("Price on All Programs" and "Coin Value") settings = The Card Reader's "Time Unit Cost" setting

The Time Unit Cost setting dictates how much the reader will charge to a Laundry Card to start the machine.

The Time Unit (mins) setting is the simulated time that the reader uses to knows when it should display that the machine is in use, as well as what amount of dry time to display to customers, on the reader's display itself.

Below is a screenshot showing the card reader's settings,

when the reader is using the newer Control Type "Universal Pulse Dryer [29]":

The main difference with this newer Control type and the default one, is that you'll need to use the same settings for the Fully Cycle settings, and Top Off settings

With the Universal Pulse Dryer [29] Control Type, you'll want to match the following machine/reader settings:

  • The Machine's "Time per Coin" setting = The Card Reader's "Top Off Time" and "Full Cycle Time (mins)" settings

  • The Machine's "Coin Value" setting = The Card Reader's "Top Off Cost" and "Full Cycle Cost" settings

  • The Machine's "Price on All Programs" setting = The Card Reader's "Full Cycle Cost" setting

  • The Maximum Dry Time setting should be left at "0" in most cases.
If set to any other number (say "30" for example), the reader will no longer take payment once 30 mins has been paid for.

  • The Pulse Type setting NEEDS to be set to "1" for the reader to work on these machines.

  • The Number of pulses for Full Cycle setting should be left at "0".

  • The Ground PIN1 (for Netmaster, Maytag dryers) setting NEEDS to be set to "0" for the reader to work on these machines.

Contact our support team if you need help determining how to configure this reader setting.

For additional information about using a multi-pulse control type, you can review our Universal Pulse Dryer [29] / Quarter Multi-Pulse [14] Control Types article.

Full Cycle Pricing: full cycle price differs from top off price (click to expand)

Machine Side Settings

With this pricing structure, the Card Reader will be programmed to send multiple pulses to the machine to start it, then switch to a top off pricing structure so that smaller increments of Top Off time can be added to an already active cycle.

For the machine side settings, you will be programming the machine to add a specific amount of Top Off time, and then use the Card Reader to trigger the machine to start with the desired amount of Full Cycle Time.

Note: the amount of Full Cycle time MUST be a multiple of the amount of Top OFF time you want to allow.

For example, you cannot program a machine to start with 10 minutes of full cycle time; but allow 3 minutes of top off time to be added because 3 is not a perfect multiple of 10.

You would be able to add either 2 mins or 5 mins of top of time; or have the machine start with either 9mins or 12mins as the full cycle time, if you want to allow 3 min adds of top off time.

Full cycle will always be Top Off time multiplied by some amount of pulses

For the machine side settings, you will need to know how much top of time you want to allow for and the full cycle cost (the top off cost will be configured, and full cycle time will be configured on the Card Reader side of things).

With this information, it is easiest to configure the machine side settings as follows

Option 1: One Pulse starts machine at all times (recommended option)

There are 3 machine side settings that need to be configured for this pricing structure. The Machine's;

  • "Time per Coin" setting = the amount of TOP OFF time the machine adds

  • "Price on All Programs" setting = the Full Cycle vend price

  • "Set Coin Value 1" setting = the Full Cycle vend price

Above are the simpler settings, as these can be used regardless of the pricing structure you ultimately setup.

Option 2: Top Off is perfect multiple of Full Cycle

If you know that both the Top Off Time and Cost will be perfect multiples of the Full Cycle Time and Cost (for example, Top OFF is $0.25 for 3 mins; Full Cycle is $1 for 12 mins) then you can use the following machine side settings:

  • "Time per Coin" setting = the amount of TOP OFF time the machine adds

  • "Price on All Programs" setting = the Full Cycle vend price

  • "Set Coin Value 1" setting = the TOP OFF vend price

The only thing this will change is the amount of pulses you program the card reader to send during it's full cycle starting tap.

Card Reader Settings

The Card Reader will need to be configured to match the settings that are being used by the machine.

There is only 1 Card Reader Control Types that can be used on machines with this pricing structure.

Below is a screenshot showing the card reader's settings,

when the reader is using the newer Control Type "Universal Pulse Dryer [29]":

The main difference with this newer Control type and the default one, is that you're able to set a Full Cycle Vend price that is different from the Top Off Vend price, if you wanted to.

If you simply want to charge the same vend price for both starting the machine, follow the configuration information in the Top Off Pricing section

With the Universal Pulse Dryer [29] Control Type,

you'll want to match the following machine/reader settings:

  • The Card Reader's "Top Off Time" setting = the Machine's "Time per Coin" setting

  • The Card Reader's "Top Off Cost" setting = The Machine's "Coin Value" setting which was set to the FULL CYCLE VEND PRICE

  • The Card Reader's "Full Cycle Cost" setting = The Machine's "Price on All Programs" setting

  • The Number of pulses for Full Cycle setting needs to be set to equal (the desired Full Cycle Time / the programmed Top Off time ("Time per Coin") setting):

If the Full Cycle Cost/Time, and Top Off Cost/Time are NOT multiples of each other, it is necessary to set this setting to trigger the correct amount of time for the Dryer to start with.

In the above example, Top Off time (the "Time per Coin" setting) is equal to 5 mins, and you want the machine to start with 25 mins of Full cycle dry time; then the reader's number of pulses needs to be set to 5 (25 mins / 5 mins = 5 pulses needed)

  • The Card Reader's "Top Off Time" setting = the Machine's "Time per Coin" setting

  • The Card Reader's "Top Off Cost" setting = the Machine's "Coin Value" setting which was set to the TOP OFF COST

  • The Card Reader's "Full Cycle Cost" setting = the Machine's "Price on All Programs" setting

  • The Number of pulses for Full Cycle setting can be left at "0" in this case, as the card reader will automatically do a ratio calculation to figure out how many pulses it needs to send.

Because the Full Cycle and Top Off time/costs are perfect multiples of each other, the reader will always calculate the pulses correctly:

However, if either the cost, or time, are NOT perfect multiples of each other, than you must use Option 1 when configuring the machine and reader settings.

For example, if Top Off time is $0.25 for 4 mins, and full cycle is $1 for 20 mins, these are NOT perfect multiples, as there are 4x quarters in the $1 full cycle price, but there are 5x 4min increments in 20 mins starting price. You would need to manually tell the Card Reader to send 5 pulses in this case, and you should be using Option 1 for machine and reader configuration

Regardless of the above configuration options you're using, the following reader settings will for both options:

  • The Maximum Dry Time setting should be left at "0" in most cases.
If set to any other number (say "60" for example), the reader will no longer take payment once 60 mins has been paid for.

  • The Pulse Type setting NEEDS to be set to "1" for the reader to work on these machines.

  • The Ground PIN1 (for Netmaster, Maytag dryers) setting NEEDS to be set to "0" for the reader to work on these machines.

Contact our support team if you need help determining how to configure the reader and machine side settings based on what you're trying to achieve with the pricing structure.

For additional information about using a multi-pulse control type, you can review our Universal Pulse Dryer [29] / Quarter Multi-Pulse [14] Control Types article.

Setting Vend Pricing

Set pricing of the card reader via the LaundroPortal. Set the actual Cycle Time duration on the machine itself. See our Configuring Card Reader/Machine Vend Prices article for general instructions on vend pricing on Pulse Communication card readers.

The price that the Card Reader is set to, is the price that customers will be charged when tapping a Laundry Card.

However, changing the price of the Card Reader will NOT change the price displayed on the dryer itself. On these machines, you need to set the price on both the Card Reader, and Machine, separately.

The actual dry time that the dryer will add, is completely control by the Dryer (NOT the Card Reader/LaundroPortal).

Whatever time you set on the dryers, you'll want to ensure that the simulated dry time setting on the Card Reader is configured to match.

Troubleshooting

Below are problems commonly encountered during installation of readers on these machines specifically.

For additional information about machine vend pricing, review our Configuring Card Reader/Machine Vend Prices article.

Issue

Explanation and resolution

Dryer can be started for Free - without a card being placed on the reader

The dryer control is in Free Mode which bypasses the Card Reader all together.

Adjust the settings inside the Dryer control. Either the Free Start Mode is enabled or the machines vend prices are set to $0 putting it in free mode.

Reader takes money from the card, says "Time Added" but no actual time is added to the machine.

After the reader takes money, check the vend price on the machines control board.

IF the vend price shown on the machine changes (goes down by some amount, usually $0.25):

  • The reader is installed correctly but the dryer is looking for more than one pulse to start.

If this is a Card Only installation, confirm you've configured the machine side settings correctly.

If this is a Hybrid Coin + Card payment setup, confirm you've adjusted the correct Coin Value setting. Only change the Coin value for the input that the card reader is connected to (typically Coin2), as the Coin Drop is using the other coin value input (typically Coin1) and needs to stay set at $0.25 for proper coin drop functionality.

IF the vend price shown on the machine does NOT change at all, it could be 1 of 4 issues:

  1. Bad connection in pulse/start wires.
Ensure that START wire (typically white) is connected according to the above instructions. It must connect to a coin input (typically Coin1 for card-only installs) or Coin2 input (for Hybrid installs)

  2. Coin1 and Coin2 value is 0 or not configured. Go into service menu ensure these are both set according to the machine side settings section

  3. The machine's PRICE ON ALL PROGRAMS setting is most likely set to $0
If this setting is set to $0, the machine may not look for pulses from the reader. Set this setting to the same VEND PRICE value that you set on the machine

  4. Dryer needs a reboot. Power cycle the machine to reset it.

    1. Once it boots back up, go into the programming menus to confirm all machine side settings are correct.

    2. Once confirmed, try starting the machine with a card

    3. if the machine doesn't register the pulse, simply go into the machine's programming menu (don't change any settings), then back out of the machine's programming menus and see if that triggers the machine to register the original readers pulse.
