  • Card Reader Kit (model CR-11-130-04 for stacks, CR-11-230-04 for singles)

    • The reader board MUST be "Generic Relay" - Part #: ASSY-02-02-11

  • Card Reader Wiring Harness

    • Part #: 02-06-68

  • 12V External Power Supply Adapter (*Not Needed in MOST cases)

    • Part #: 03-01-46

Installation Summary

Installation Steps

Step 0: Number the machines in the location

Before proceeding, it is recommended that you assign numbers and labels to each machines in the laundry room/building.

Step 1: Turn Machine Power OFF

It is always recommended to power the machine off before install the card readers.

Step 2: Number the reader using the DIP switches

In order to configure a Card Reader to report as a specific Washer or Dryer number, you need to set the reader's DIP Switches to specific positions. These DIP Switches ONLY affect what the reader will display as for it's machine type (Washer/Dryer) and it's machine number:

Review our: Reader DIP Switch settings article for details on how to set the Card Reader's Machine Type, and Reader Number.

You need to do this BEFORE mounting the Card Readers onto the machines, as accessing the back of the card reader is required.

Step 3: Remove the Coin Drop (For Card-Only Installs)

The Card Reader will be mounted in the area where the Coin Drop has been removed.

Step 4: Card Reader Signal/Start Connection

Card-Only installations (click to expand)

For models that a have a screw terminals, connect the reader's Green and White wires to terminals 3 and 4 from the top:

However, some models may not have this screw terminal, instead the coin-drop uses a white board-edge connector as shown below.

In this case you'll need to splice the reader's Start wires (Green and White) into these existing wires (and cut-off any excess going to the coin-drop).

The reader harness's White wire should splice to the middle wire, while the reader harness's Green wire should splice to bottom wire.

Hybrid (Card + Coin) installations (click to expand)

On these installs, you'll be keeping the coin drop connected to the machine, and the card reader's start wires will need to be wired into the coin drop's wires, in series.

To do this, you will cut the Coin Drop's White wire, and connect 1 end to the reader's White wire, and the other end to the reader's Green wire, like in the figure below:

selectedImg

This will allow both the Card Reader, and the Coin Drop to be able to send Pulses to this machine to trigger payment.

Step 5: Card Reader Power Connection

When connecting the Card Reader to DC power, the Blue wire is negative (-), and the Red wire is positive (+). When connected to AC power, the positions don't matter. The reader can use 12V - 24V (DC or AC)

OPTION 1 - If reader cable harness has a 2-pin white board-edge connector, connect it to P8 as shown below.

selectedImg

OPTION 2 - If your reader kit came with a 12Vdc external power supply, connect this power supply to an available outlet. Otherwise, splice the power supply to 110V/220Vac and connect the 12Vdc plug to the mating plug on the harness.

When connecting to the machine directly, you'll be cutting off the AC prong, and splicing these wires directly to the machine (we recommend consulting the manufacturer, or an electrician, to confirm this type of connection).

OPTION 3 - to wires coming out of P9, which typically have 18Vac on them. Contact our support team if you need to use this option for reader power.

On some older versions of these machine control boards, this 18Vac power connection will be on the P1 header (as shown below):

Step 6: Mount the Reader

Card-Only installation (click to expand)

The card reader kit will come with the following mounting bracket:

This bracket will fit where the coin-drop was remove; no drilling is required for this installation.

Hybrid (Card + Coin) installation (click to expand)

You will need to drill custom holes in order to mount the reader to the machine. Find any appropriate spot on the front of the machine that does not interfere with the existing control board and wiring.

Step 7: Activate Card Reader

Proceed to secure the reader to the machine and then Activate the card reader using the Activation Card for this specific location:

Note: you MUST use the Activation Card for THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION,
or else the card reader will not appear on the LaundroPortal for this location.

This will activate the reader and programs the reader with the location's specific Support and Location IDs.

The Card Reader will then automatically connect to VAC01's wireless network and once connected, will be visible on the LaundroPortal where you can configure it's vend prices.

Setting Vend Prices

Set pricing of the card reader via the LaundroPortal.

See our Configuring Card Reader/Machine Vend Prices article for general instructions on vend pricing on Pulse Communication card readers.

Card-Only installations (click to expand)

The machine needs to be configured to start from ONE Pulse from the card reader.

To do this, you can either set the starting price of the machine to $0.25 so it starts from 1 Pulse.

Or you can set the price of the machine to whatever price the customer wants to charge, but if you do this, you ALSO need to change the Coin Value setting to be equal to the full Vend Price the machine is charging. This ensures that the ONE pulse the reader sends, satisfies the full vend price and triggers the machine to start.

For Hybrid (Coin + Card) installations (click to expand)

Depending on what the customer is going to be charging for these machines, the Laundroworks support team may need to update the card reader's firmware/Control Type to allow the reader to send multiple pulses each time, if that's necessary.

In general, we recommend setting the dryers to start for $0.25, and add the same amount of time each time (regardless of if the machine is running or at idle).

If the Dryers is setup to start for $0.25, and add the same amount of time each time, then pricing a Hybrid machine is the exact same as pricing Card Only machines.

If setting up Hybrid readers, where the customer charges multiple quarters to start/add time to the machines, get in touch with our support team so we can help configure the card readers for multiple pulses. Regardless of what pricing your using, the reader can only charge 1 vend price amount, so the machine needs to be setup to add the same amount of time, regardless of if the machine is running on at idle.

Below is a screenshot of the reader settings, and how each setting works:

the Time Unit cost setting

Every time you tap/present the card, the reader will deduct the Time Unit Cost from the laundry cards balance, but it will only send ONE pulse to the machine, just like inserting 1 quarter into a coin-drop.

The price configured, and displayed, on the machine is largely irrelevant. Some store owners will match the price on the machine to the price on the reader. The problem with this approach is that if you want to change the vend price in the future, they'll need to change the price on both the card reader and the machine itself.

Other owners set the machine vend price to 1 penny. This way, machine users would not pay much attention to the machine's displayed price, and instead focus on the reader's displayed price. Setting things this way allows the owner to adjust prices of the card reader, without needing to worry about synchronizing the display on the machine.

the Time Unit (mins) setting

The Time-Unit parameter is ONLY used by the reader, to simulate the dry time being added to the machine; this setting DOES NOT control the actual dry time that the Dryer is adding; the amount of dry time is controlled entirely by the machine directly.
So the reader's Time Unit (mins) setting should be set to the actual amount of time that the machine adds, so that the reader is in sync with the actual dry time the machine adds.

Troubleshooting

Below are problems commonly encountered during installation of readers on these machines specifically.

For additional information about machine vend pricing, review our Configuring Card Reader/Machine Vend Prices article.

Issue

Explanation and resolution

Reader taking money but machine doesn't start

First thing to confirm is the Card Reader's Start wires (GREEN and WHITE) are properly connected to the machine as per the Reader Pulse/Signal Connection section.

The Card Reader will only sends ONE pulse to the machine, so ensure that the machine is configured to start off of one pulse.

If the machine is only deducting 25cents from its displayed vend price, when a Laundry Card is used, then the Card Reader is installed correctly, but the machine side settings need to be configured so it starts from 1 pulse (the machine is currently registering the pulse, but only as a 25cents payment instead of the entire vend price).

Therefore, inside the MACHINE's configuration settings, you can either:

  1. Change the value of one pulse to be equal to the full vend price of the machine, or

  2. Change the machine's vend price to $0.25 or $0.01.

In either case, the one pulse from the reader would satisfy the machine's vend price and trigger the machine to start it's cycle.

The machine starts, but once the cycle is over the Card Reader continues to display "Busy"

The Card Reader's Cycle Time (mins) setting is out of sync with the machine actual cycle time of the machine:

Pulse communication Card Readers are NOT communicating with the machine directly, so the only way the Card Reader knows how long a wash cycle lasts for is based on the amount of time programmed into the Card Reader's Cycle Time (mins) setting.

Regardless of what's actually happening with the machine, once the reader takes a payment, it starts a timer based on this setting, and the reader will display "Busy" until it's internal time has expired.

The machine is in complete control of the cycle time, so adjust the machine settings to set the actual cycle time, then ensure you configure the reader with the same cycle time.

If you have different cycles that last for different amounts of time, the reader should be programmed with the shortest cycle's time.

Card Reader reboots itself whenever it takes payment from a Laundry Card

Especially if using the external power supply for reader power, ensure it's pulling power from a source that provides constant power at all times.

It may be the case that the power supply is connected to wires that only provide constant power when the machine is at idle, but during a cycle start, power may be interrupted temporarily causing the reader to reboot.

If you've confirmed that the reader receives constant power during the machines start up sequency, try doing a swap test to see if the power supply or card reader board has a hardware issue.
