Apart from the default critical path for your project, you can also track your important milestones as separate critical paths. This will allow you to know the status of the milestone at any point of time, and see which activities are critical to that particular milestone.

To mark a milestone as critical, double-click the milestone to open the Detail view.

You will see the button to mark it as a critical milestone. Simply click on the button to make it critical, and click Yes again to confirm your action.

Keep in mind that this feature is available only after the Pre-configuration Phase, i.e. after your first generation of Lookahead.

Once you mark the milestone as critical, it will have an indication with a Flag icon beside its name that it is a critical milestone. Here, you will be able to click on that Flag and change its color. This is to allow you to differentiate between all the critical milestones that you are tracking.

When a milestone has been marked as critical, all the activities that belong to the critical path of that milestone will also be indicated by a rectangular shape under the activity. The rectangle will also have the color of its corresponding critical milestone.

If the activity belongs to multiple critical paths, even including the default project critical path, there will be multiple rectangles under the activity.

In the detailed view of the activity, you will be able to see which critical path it belongs to. Double-click to open the detailed view of the activity:

Note: Marking the milestone as critical can also be done in the Lookahead, given that the milestone is scheduled in the lookahead window.

After setting the milestones, you will be able to track them via the Insights. Go to the left panel and click on the Insights.

How to access the Insights

In the overview tab, there will be two modules related to the critical milestones.

First is the Critical Milestone Status. This module shows all the milestones that have been marked as critical, their base end date, current expected end date and the variance. The variance column will show its status in comparison to the base and expected end date of each critical milestone.

Another module is the Project Delays and Advances. In the module, there is a tab for Critical milestones where each event that made the critical milestone delay or advance will be recorded and shown. Click through the milestones to see all the critical delays and advances that took place for each of them.

Click on each event to open the delay history of the activity, task or constraint related to the critical milestone in detail.
