Introduction

Once Slack is integrated with LegalOn, you can:

  • Automatically post updates from Matter Management to designated Slack channels

  • Send and receive messages between Slack and the matter’s detail page in LegalOn (two-way sync)*

* Replies are synchronized between Slack and the [Slack] tab on the matter detail page.

This functionality is especially useful for users who prefer Slack as their primary communication platform, streamlining collaboration and matter management.

Preparation

Step 1: Integrate Slack with LegalOn

To use this feature, your IT administrator must complete the integration setup.
See: [How to integrate Slack with LegalOn]

Step 2 (Recommended): Restrict posting in linked Slack channels

To ensure messages are sent via the proper method:

  • Users must click the [Reply to the thread] button in the LegalOn message—not use Slack's native thread reply field.

  • If users reply directly in a Slack thread (instead of via the provided button), the message will not sync with LegalOn.

To prevent unintended replies, we recommend making the channel read-only using Slack's settings.
See: [Manage Posting Permissions in Channels | Slack Help Center]

Creating a Slack thread from the Matter detail page

To begin using Slack for a matter, you must first link the matter to a specific Slack channel and create a dedicated thread.

  1. Go to the matter detail page and click the [Slack] tab.

  2. Fill out the following fields and click [Create a Slack thread]:

Field

Description

Required

Slack channel to create threads

Select the Slack channel to link to this matter. This is where the thread will be created.

Notification of thread creation (Slack account)

Mention a Slack user (e.g., the requester or related stakeholders) to notify them when the thread is created.

Optional

After submission, a confirmation message will appear on the matter detail page, and a new thread will be created in the specified Slack channel.

⚠️ Notes

  • You can create only one Slack thread per matter.

  • Once created, the linked Slack channel cannot be changed.

  • Only public channels are supported. Private channels are not allowed.

  • If the notification recipient is not a member of the channel, they won’t receive a mention.

  • Renaming the Slack channel later will not update the name in LegalOn.

Sending messages to the Slack thread from LegalOn

  1. Go to the matter’s [Slack] tab.

  2. Click [Reply to a thread] on the top-right of the message you want to reply to.

  3. Enter your message and click [Post].

Your message will appear both in the Slack thread and in the [Slack] tab of the matter.

⚠️ Notes

Message Restrictions:

  • Sent messages cannot be edited or deleted.

  • Only individual user mentions are supported (e.g., @username).
Group mentions like @here, @channel, or @everyone are not supported.

  • Mentioned users who are not in the channel will not receive a notification.

💡Info

To view a message directly in Slack, click the ellipsis (⋯) menu next to the message → [View on Slack].
