This article explains document types and how they work in LegalOn.
What are document types?
In LegalOn, document types categorize your files based on how you use them.
There are three document types:
Contracts
My Templates
Other
When you upload a file to LegalOn, it is automatically sorted into one of these categories. The tools you can use and the details you can see will change depending on the document type.
What are contracts?
This category is for documents handled as contracts, both before and after they are signed. You can only assign this category to DOCX or PDF files.
You can see all files categorized as [Contracts] in the [Vault Repository] list.
Note: The Signed tab in Vault Repository only shows contracts that have a "Signed" status.
What are My Templates?
This category is for documents handled as your company templates. You can only assign this category to Word or PDF files.
You can see all files categorized as [My Templates] in the [Templates] list.
What are “Other” documents?
This category is for any supporting documents related to your contracts, other than the contracts themselves or your templates. You can also upload file formats other than DOCX or PDF (*).
You can find your "Other" documents in a few different places:
Files list: Under the All tab. For details, see How to View “Other” Files.
Search: From the Other Files list in the search menu. For details, see How to View “Other” Files.
Matter information page: If a document is attached to a matter, you can find it in the timeline or under Linked files on that matter's page.
(*) To see which file formats LegalOn supports, check System Requirements for LegalOn.

How document types are automatically categorized
Uploading from list pages
When you upload a file from a document list page, it is automatically categorized as follows:
Upload screen | Document type |
Vault Repository (All) | Contracts Note: Selecting "Executed contracts" during upload gives the document a "Signed" status. |
Signed contracts list | Contracts Note: Selecting "Executed contracts" during upload gives the document a "Signed" status. |
Templates list | My Templates |
Importing from other features
When files are imported from matters, document types are determined automatically:

Files attached to a matter | LegalOn automatically analyzes the file when it's added to determine its document type:
