How to create Graphing Items for learning activities:

  1. Click on My Student Actions from the left menu.

  2. Click on the green Add Student Action button in the top right of the Student Actions panel.

  3. Click Next.

4. Here you will see a new panel. At the top will be the Details section. You can add the Grade, Subject, a Description (optional), set the Status of the item (automatically sets it to inactive, be sure to make it active if you want to use it on an assignment), and select the Item Type which in this case would be Graphing.

5. Below the Details section, you will see the Tagging section followed by the Attachments section. In the Tagging section, you can add this new item to an Action Bank, tag the Standards, add Custom Tags, and add the DOK Level. In the Attachments section, you can add attachments to the item such as documents, images, websites, etc. which would then show up with this item on an assignment for students (optional).

Scrolling down, you will now see the Content section. Here is where you are going to create your Graphing item.

6. Here you can add Teacher Instructions. These are not the student directions.

7. Here is where you will put the Prompt. This will be the directions for the students and what they will see for this item when taking an assignment.

8. Here is where you can configure the layout of your graphs grid. It will always be automatically set to a 4-quadrant grid so if you wish to change that, you would do so here.

9. Here you can further customize the grid by changing the values for both the x-axis and y-axis, as well as the labels and dimensions.

10. Below that is where you will define the graph attributes. This is the graph the students will see for this item when on an assignment.

A - This dropdown menu allows you to add/change shapes when adding points to the graph. It is automatically set to be a circle so you may want to change this depending on the graph you are creating.

B - Here you can add a title for your graph.

C - Here you can add labels for your graph.

D - Here is where you will define points for the graph.

*Remember this is the graph the students will see, if you do not wish to have any starting points, you can leave the graph blank.*

11. Below that first graph will be a second one. This is the one you will use to define the correct answer. If there is more than one possible answer, you can also add alternate answers by clicking the Add Alternate button in the bottom left corner under this graph.

At the bottom of the panel...

12. Here you can add a Rationale if you would like one.

13. Here you have the option to turn on a calculator for students to use with this item.

14. Here you can add Teacher Notes. These notes are for your own personal use.

15. Finally, you have the Sharing section. You can click on the Share With Selected Colleagues button and share with others at any time (optional). When sharing, we highly recommended only allowing others to make a copy or read only, unless you are wanting them to be able to edit your original you just created.
