Overview

Leonardo.Ai is once again redefining the resolution limits of generative imagery with the new Ultra Mode. This feature allows you to generate larger and higher quality images with Phoenix with just a click. You can also upscale any images generated with other Presets and Models or upload your own images to do so, granting you greater flexibility in aesthetic choices and preferences.

About Ultra Mode

Phoenix Integration: Ultra Mode resides as an Image Resolution option within the Phoenix preset and has been adjusted through countless iterations to get the most out of Phoenix, letting you easily generate larger and higher quality images with just a click.

Fine Control: Alongside the one-click option for Phoenix, Ultra Mode can be used on images within your Personal Feed or the Image Creation feed. This lets you define certain settings before upscaling the image, allowing for greater control over the end result.

Universal Upscaler Integration: Ultra Mode is also available in Universal Upscaler as an additional upscale method, allowing you to upscale uploaded images from your devices.

How to use Ultra Mode

With Phoenix Preset

  1. Go to the Image Creation tool and then select the Phoenix preset.

  2. Switch your Generation Mode to Ultra, then tweak any other settings as usual

  3. Generate your image as usual.

Note: This method is slightly different than upscaling an Fast / Quality resolution image. The upscale settings utilized for the Phoenix Ultra mode is specially finetuned for most Phoenix images and cannot be adjusted.

If you would like to have greater control over the upscale result, it is recommended to generate an image with Quality mode instead and upscale it with Ultra afterwards. (See below for details)

In the Image Creation tool

  1. In the Image Creation tool page, hover your cursor over an image then click the

    button.

  2. Adjust the Upscaler Style, Creativity Scale, and additional settings if needed, then click on Upscale to confirm. (Note that the token cost will be displayed in the button).

  3. Once complete, you may click on the image, then switch to the Ultra Upscaler version in the bottom left of the image viewer.

In the Personal Feed / Team Feed

  1. In your Personal Feed or Team Feed, hover your cursor over an image then click the

    button.

In the Universal Upscaler

  1. In the Universal Upscaler, upload your image and then click on Ultra under Upscale Mode if it has not already been automatically selected.

  2. Adjust the Upscaler Style, Upscale Multiplier, Creativity Scale, and additional settings if needed, then click on Upscale to confirm. (Note that the token cost will be displayed in the button).

  3. Once complete, view the image result by click the image in the dock below. You can download the result by clicking the button found in the top right corner.

Settings

When Ultra-upscaling an image through the modal or in the Universal Upscaler, you will be presented with several options. Note that these settings are not available when using the Ultra resolution mode available in the Phoenix preset.

  • Upscaler Style: Choosing between Artistic and Realistic will greatly affect the result. It is highly recommended to use Artistic when using Ultra with 2D style imagery.

  • Creativity Strength: Determines how much creative deviation occurs when adding additional detail to the image. Note that higher strengths will greatly change the image from the original.

  • Upscale Multiplier: Determines how large the image will be upscaled.

  • Advanced Settings:

    • Detail Contrast: Similar to the HDR options on other upscale services, this affects the contrast levels of details within the image. This effect can be very pronounced on the edges of objects and may look unrealistic if set to extremely high levels (similar to an extreme Unsharp Mask effect in Photoshop or Structure / Sharpness in photo editors).

    • Similarity: Determines how far the overall image structure will retain similarity or diverge from the original. Useful when using with Creativity Strength to preserve some semblance of the original image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ultra Mode available for all users?

  • Ultra Upscaler is only available for users with an subscription plan.

What are the token costs for using Ultra Mode?

  • When using Ultra Mode in Phoenix:

  • When upscaling images (including within Universal Upscaler):
4 tokens per Megapixel (MP) of the output resolution, rounded to the nearest token, with a maximum cost of 80 tokens (20MP).

    • Megapixel = image width x image height / 1,000,000

Can Ultra Mode be used when Relaxed Generations is active?

  • Relaxed usage for Ultra Mode is only available when generating images using Ultra Mode in Phoenix, and only for users on the Maestro plan and Teams users.

  • Relaxed usage is NOT available when using Ultra Mode to upscale images.

Are there any resolution limits for Ultra Mode?

  • Images can be upscaled to a maximum of 20MP.

What is the difference between Ultra Upscale, Universal Upscale (Legacy mode), and Alchemy Upscale?

  • Ultra Upscale is a much more enhanced upscale method, allowing greater control in comparison to the other methods and at a lower cost than the Legacy mode of Universal Upscaler. Contrast of details can be increased along with an feature to preserve overall image similarity. In addition, the Artistic upscale style is excellent for a wide range of stylized imagery. Ultra Upscaler works extremely well in adding fine detail and is the recommended upscale method.

The Universal Upscaler's Legacy mode is the previous version of Universal Upscaler. It is slightly more simplified, and works best as a general upscaler. It also includes prompt input which can be very useful if Ultra upscale fails to properly understand the elements of the source image. Legacy mode can be tried if Ultra Upscale does not achieve the desired results on the image.

Alchemy Upscale is the most simplified of the three, and acts more as an image refiner than an proper upscaler. Note that it is not possible to adjust the amount of visual changes that will occur in the result, unlike in Ultra and Universal Upscaler.

What use cases do you recommend for Ultra Upscale, Universal Upscale, and Alchemy Upscale?

  • For print, images that require intricate textural detail, or highly stylized images and production grade imagery: Ultra

  • For high resolution images used in digital medium and production: Ultra

  • For refining images or slightly restyling or adding more definition to the images quickly: Alchemy Upscale

Is Ultra Mode available on the Leonardo API?

  • Yes, Ultra mode is supported on the Leonardo API. To use Ultra Mode with Phoenix, pleas refer to the article: Generate Images Using Leonardo Phoenix Model. To use Ultra Mode with the Universal Upscaler, please refer to the article: Upscale with Universal Upscaler. Ultra mode is available to use in any API plan like API Basic Plan, API Standard Plan, API Pro Plan, and API Custom Plan.
