About Flipcards and Reveal Cards

Flipcards and reveal cards are like flashcards, the time-honored learning aid that helped you ace your French exams in high school. Flipcards are interactive, customizable, and content rich, supporting both text and images.

Why include flipcards in your lessons? Here are some of the benefits:

  • They focus attention and engage active recall, improving long-term memory

  • They give learners more control over their own learning pace, enhancing motivation

  • They visualize information, helping learners associate images with ideas

  • They provide immediate feedback, helping learners check their understanding

Flipcards and reveal cards are functionally similar, differing only in the way they reveal their hidden contents.

Add Flipcards and Reveal Cards to Lessons

Open the lesson builder, and then select Add Element. Select Flipcard or Reveal from the element menu.

Here's what a blank flipcard looks like.

Look familiar? That's because flipcards basically fuse text elements with image elements.

In the first text box, enter the content you want to display on the front of the card. You can style your text in all of the usual ways. You can also add secondary, subordinate text to the front of your card. This is a great way to give learners hints, prompts, or encouragement.

Optionally, add an image to the front of your card. You can upload a new, independent image or select one from the image library.

πŸ“ Note: We recommend an image size of 400 px by 267 px. The flip and reveal cards themselves have dimensions of 401 px by 802 px. Images that exceed these measurements are automatically resized.

Prevent your images from being squashed and stretched by resizing them before adding them to Seismic Learning. This in-browser resizing tool is free and easy to use.

In the second text box, add the content you want to display on the back of the card, i.e., the content learners will see when they select flip or reveal. Here, too, you can add an image; but remember, less is often more. Help learners create a strong association between concepts and images by using the latter sparingly.

Also, note that images on flip and reveal cards cannot be repositioned. They will always display above the card's text.

Make Content Scrollable

When using reveal cards, you can elect to add a scrollbar.

Making reveal cards scrollable helps learners read and process large, multi-paragraph chunks of text. Accordingly, this setting is enabled by default.

If you disable the scrollbar, the reveal card is rendered at full length in order to fit all text in the dialog. Learners must scroll the window itself to see below-the-fold content.

Accessibility Features

You can interact with flipcards and reveal cards using only your keyboard.

  1. Press the Tab key until a focus indicator appears on the Flip (or Reveal) button.

  2. Press Enter to flip or reveal the card.

You can also use a screen reader to interact with flipcards. Navigate the page by pressing Ctrl+Opt+Left arrow or Right arrow. Select the Flip or Reveal buttons by pressing Ctrl+Opt+Spacebar.
