About retake limits

Setting a maximum retake value allows you to limit the number of times learners can attempt a lesson after failing to achieve a passing grade. This setting helps trainers identify those learners who may require remedial instruction or coaching.

Before you begin

  • You must have team management permissions.

  • You must set a retake score. Learn more.

Set retake limits

  1. From the Content page, select a lesson title to open its overview page.

  2. Locate Maximum Attempts in the right-hand settings panel.

  3. Enter the maximum number of attempts learners can make.

You must enter a whole number between 1 and 1000.

  4. Select Save.

Troubleshooting

You can set a retake score without a maximum retake limit, but you can't set a retake limit without a retake score. Removing an active retake score also removes the maximum attempts value.

What to do next

If you're a grader, monitor your daily digest emails. You're notified when users reach their maximum retake limit, and you can reassign content right from the email.

Reassign content with retake limits

Graders and admins can manually reassign training content after learners reach the maximum retake limit. There are three ways to complete reassignment.

  1. From daily digest emails: Recipients are notified by email the day after learners reach a retake limit. Only one reassignment notice is given; this notice will not recur in future digest emails.

  2. From the lesson overview page: On a lesson or path overview page, locate "Awaiting Reassignment" in the Assignments section. Select View All, and then select Reassign for each applicable learner.

You can also reassign content in bulk. Select each applicable learner, and then select Reassign from the top of the table.

  3. From the report card: On the learner overview page, locate "Awaiting Reassignment" in the Assignments section. Select View All, select the content you want to reassign, and then select reassign the lesson from the banner at the top of the page.

📝 Note: Reassigning content resets the maximum retake value. For example, suppose a learner exhausts the three attempts you originally provided. After reassignment, that same learner will have three fresh attempts to successfully complete the content.
