According to AAFCO, who sets the minimum nutritional formula, there has to be some amount of salt present in our products. Sodium Chloride is needed for muscles such as lungs and heart to work. If there’s no salt present, the muscles go flaccid.

Salt is also required for the nervous system so that transmissions can go from one nerve to the next. Salt is required for the kidney. While salt is related to urine output and thirst, the mechanism is much more involved. There are a host of factors involved in kidney function such as the amounts of other minerals such as potassium, the amount of Angiotensin (a hormone) produced and the constriction of blood vessels, especially at various parts of the heart.

We add salt because our ingredients don’t have much. It is like cooking. Some people don’t cook with salt and the user has to add it. Some people cook with salt and the user doesn’t need to add any additional salt.
