There are a number of reasons why cats should not be fed a vegetarian diet:

1. Cats require high quantities of animal protein such as fish, beef and chicken. Vegetable protein such as tofu does not contain the same protein constituents that meat does. Humans can convert the vegetable constituents into needed protein but cats can’t. They must have the animal protein in their diet every day.

2. Felines derive significant nutrition from animal based fat sources in their cat food. Some of the nutrients found in animal fats are simply not available in vegetable sources.

3. Cats have short intestines. Humans have long intestines. Digestion of vegetable protein requires a long intestine.

4. Cats can’t convert Beta Carotene from vegetables. Humans get their Vitamin A requirement from the conversion of Beta Carotene in vegetables to Vitamin A. Cats can only get their vitamin A from meat protein such as liver.

Our view is that the vegetarian foods available on the market may be technically complete and balanced, they are not offering the level of nutrition that cats need to thrive.
