Several years ago, Consumer Reports published an article that cited testing of various kinds of rice from around the world. At issue was the presence of arsenic, a naturally occurring element found in soil which can have a negative effect if consumed in large amounts. At present, the FDA does not mandate limits on arsenic levels in foods, although there are federal guidelines about limits in drinking water. The amounts found in numerous rice-based products varied, but were on the order of magnitude of some parts per billion ... in other words, extremely tiny trace amounts.
