Google tends to be tight-lipped when it comes to sharing why a listing may have been suspended. This is to prevent people from learning what caused their suspension, thus having the chance to become better at not getting caught.

Now while there isn't complete transparency into Google's decision to suspended your listing, there are ways to know how serious the infraction was by learning what type of suspension you're dealing with.

There are two different types of suspensions with GMB: Soft and hard suspensions:

Soft Suspension: A soft suspension means that your listing has become unverified, so the listings themselves will be unaffected. If your listing still shows up on Google and in Maps, then chances are you're only dealing with a soft suspension.

Hard Suspension: This is a tough one. With a hard suspension, your entire listing has been removed and the public cannot access it anymore. In cases like this, your only option is to appeal to be reinstated. If the listing is reinstated, they'll also reinstate the owner and managers.

Common reasons for a listing suspension

Most listings that get suspended have to do with local consistency. Here are some of the most common reasons a listing will get suspended:

  • You've added extra keywords into the business name field

  • Your listed website has a forwarding URL

  • You're a service-area business and didn't disable your physical address

  • You created a listing at a virtual office or a P.O. box

  • Your business is online and doesn't have a physical permanent address

  • You're in a category that has a lot of spam, so the spam filters are tighter (I.e. locksmiths, HVAC, plumbing, and other home services businesses)

  • You have multiple verified listings for the same business.

How to fix a suspended listing

Important: To avoid delays, only submit one reinstatement request per listing.

  1. Review your listing for compliance with the guidelines

  2. Once you’re sure your locations comply with their guidelines and include all required information, you can request for their reinstatement
