Choose Whether Your Form Asks for a Phone Number or an Email

Form builders can now require either a phone number or an email address, rather than always requiring both.

What changed

When you build a form, you now choose which contact detail the form requires: a phone number or an email address. Previously the form decided this for you, which meant some schools were asking for a detail their audience was reluctant to give.

Who this affects

  • Staff who build and edit forms — admissions, marketing, and anyone maintaining an enrollment or inquiry form.

  • Programs that reach families mainly by text and want a phone number first.

  • Programs that reach families mainly by email and were losing submissions to a required phone field.

What you do

  1. Open the form in the form builder.

  2. Find the contact detail setting on the form's fields.

  3. Choose whether the form requires a phone number or an email address.

  4. Save and re-share the form. People filling it in from that point on will see the field you chose.

What you'll see

Submitters are asked for only the detail you selected. Responses still show whichever details the person supplied, so a contact who volunteers both will have both recorded.

Before you switch a live form, think about how you follow up. If your journeys and automations send email, requiring only a phone number will leave some new contacts without an email address to send to — and the reverse is also true.

Notes for reviewers

  • Confirm the exact name and location of the setting in the form builder — the release note did not name it.

  • Confirm whether the choice is strictly one or the other, or whether "both required" and "either one" are also options.

  • Confirm what happens to responses already collected when the setting is changed on a live form.

  • Screenshot needed: the setting in the form builder.

  • Fact check the follow-up warning above with someone on the journeys side before publishing.
