Turning Lava On and Off in Assignments

Teachers can control whether Lava hints are available within individual assignments and quizzes.

How to Enable or Disable Lava

  1. Open the Create Assignment flow.

  2. Locate the Lava setting during assignment setup.

  3. Toggle Lava:

    • ON to allow hints and guidance

    • OFF to disable Lava support

  4. Create or update the assignment.

Your Lava preference will automatically save for future assignments.

Default Lava Settings by Grade

  • Grades 0–2: Lava is turned OFF by default

  • Grades 3 and above: Lava is turned ON by default

A Lava tooltip may appear once for existing users during assignment creation.

Edit Lava on Existing Assignments

To update Lava settings after an assignment has already been created:

  1. Open the assignment.

  2. Select Edit.

  3. Update the Lava setting.

  4. Save your changes.

Why Teachers Use Lava

Teachers may choose to turn Lava:

  • ON when students need additional guidance or support

  • OFF when independent problem solving or assessment conditions are preferred

This allows teachers to adjust support levels based on instructional goals and student needs.
