The Progress Stats provide a clear overview of how pupils are progressing through subtopics and skills.
This Year Tab
The This Year tab displays progress for the current school year. Teachers can view how pupils are performing in the subtopics assigned for their year group. This view offers a clear snapshot of pupil mastery and helps guide instruction throughout the year.
Historic Tab
The Historic tab allows teachers to review how pupils performed in the previous school year. For users in the UK, this view shows progress based on the year-group subtopics from the year before. This provides valuable insight into pupils’ prior knowledge and readiness for the current year.
How Progress Is Calculated
Pupil Activity
A pupil is considered active if they have solved at least one problem linked to any skill in Magma Math. Inactive pupils (who have not solved any problems) are excluded from the calculations.
Skill Evaluation
Each skill is evaluated based on the pupil’s last five problems that include that skill:
✅ Achieved: The pupil answered at least half correctly
❌ Not achieved: The pupil answered less than half correctly
🔄 Skill can be lost: If a pupil previously achieved the skill but now answers less than half correctly, they lose it
A skill reflects a pupil’s most recent work, rather than only their past success.
3. Subtopics and Skills
Every year group in Magma Math is made up of units, which include subtopics. Each subtopic contains skills and problems. When pupils solve problems, they work toward achieving the underlying skills within each subtopic.
The Progress tab aggregates this information to show overall mastery for the class.
Why the Progress Tab Might Look Different from Assignments
You may notice that a pupil’s assignments appear “green”, while their Progress tab still shows red. This occurs because assignments often focus on specific skills, whereas the Progress tab measures mastery across all skills within a subtopic or unit.
For example:
A subtopic may include several underlying skills.
An assignment might cover only one of these skills, meaning a pupil may perform well (green on the assignment) but still appear red in the Progress tab until they have achieved the remaining skills.
Assignments show progress on the skills included in that particular task.
Progress tab shows how many of the total skills in that year group, subtopic, or unit have been achieved.
This provides a fuller and more accurate picture of pupil learning beyond individual assignments.
