Follow-Up assignment

After pupils work through an assignment, follow-up assignments make it easy to turn their results into differentiated practice.

Written by Vera Palm

Magma uses pupils' results on an assignment to group them automatically and suggest practice at the right level. You can give every pupil a targeted next step without building separate assignments yourself.

How follow-up assignments work

Open an assignment, go to the Stats tab and select Expanded. The Follow up assignment panel is on the right, next to the skills matrix.

Magma sorts pupils into three groups based on how they did on the original assignment:

  • Challenge – pupils who scored 70% or more and are ready for harder practice.

  • Revision – pupils who scored between 50% and 70% and would benefit from more practice on the same skills.

  • Basics – pupils who scored below 50% and need to strengthen the foundations first.

The number next to each group shows how many pupils are in it. Hover over the number to see their names.

Each follow-up assignment has 6 problems. Magma picks problems that match the skills in the original assignment and adjusts the level for each group. Where possible, it chooses problems the class hasn't been given before.

Create a follow-up assignment

  1. Open the original assignment and go to the Stats tab.

  2. Select Expanded.

  3. Find the Follow up assignment panel on the right.

  4. Hover over the number next to Challenge, Revision and Basics to check which pupils are in each group.

  5. Click CREATE next to a group to send that group its follow-up assignment, or click CREATE ALL to send all three at once.

The follow-up assignment is published straight away to the pupils in that group only. It gets the same name as the original assignment followed by the group name, for example "Homework: Algebra - Challenge", and it is marked Follow-up in your assignment list.

Once a group's assignment has been created, its card shows a progress circle. Click the card to open the follow-up assignment's heatmap in a new tab.

When are follow-up assignments available?

Follow-up assignments appear when Magma has enough information and suitable problems to make a good recommendation. For this to happen:

  • The original assignment must contain problems linked to skills.

  • The pupils who started the assignment must have completed around 65% or more of it between them.

  • The class must have a year group set in Magma.

  • Magma must be able to find enough practice problems at the right level for all three groups.

If the class hasn't completed enough of the assignment yet, the panel is greyed out and shows the message "More pupil solutions needed to generate follow up assignments".

Why can't I see a follow-up assignment?

If follow-up assignments don't appear for an assignment, it may be because:

  • The class hasn't completed enough of the original assignment yet.

  • The assignment contains problems that aren't linked to skills.

  • The class doesn't have a year group set.

  • There aren't enough matching practice problems for the class's year group and the skills in the assignment. This can happen when the problems in the original assignment come from a different year group than the class.

  • Follow-up assignments aren't available yet for your curriculum.

Not every assignment will generate follow-up assignments. If you think they should appear and they don't, message us in the chat.
