How do I choose a good keyword?

Four questions to help you choose words for your listing.

Written by Richie Peplin

A good keyword helps the right shopper recognize your item. Use these four questions when you're deciding between phrases.

Does it describe what I sell?

Start with the product itself. A phrase about a personalized mug only fits if you offer personalization.

Are shoppers looking for the same kind of item?

Search the phrase and look at the products. A finished mug and a downloadable mug design can share words while serving different shoppers.

How does it compare with another phrase?

Use Compare to see searches, engagement and competition together. A smaller, more specific phrase may fit your item better than a broad one.

Can I use it naturally?

Read it in your title. Does it sound clear? For a tag, keep within Etsy's 20-character limit, including spaces.

Choose the phrase that passes these checks. If your current wording is already the clearest fit, keep it.
