Weight Management
Updated over 4 months ago

A healthy weight ensures our feline diners enjoy a life of purrre quality. If our cat’s overindulge, it could lead to obesity, which in turn might bring unwelcome issues like diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and a reduced lifespan. On the flip side, an underweight cat may struggle with a weakened immune system, muscle wastage, and potential organ failure.

Here’s some weight management tips to keep your cat in tip-top shape?

How do I know if my cat is too chunky or too lean?

  • Body Condition Scoring - To visually assess your cat's weight, you can use a Body Condition Score chart. It categorises cats as under ideal, ideal, or over ideal weight. Simply observe your cat from above and check if their ribs and waist are visible. To view the chart, please click here.

  • Physical Assessment - If your cat is fluffy and the BCS chart is tricky, you can feel for yourself. Run your hand along their ribs to check for bony areas or over their back to feel for their spine.

  • Weighing - The most accurate method, though sometimes challenging, is to weigh your cat on a scale. Use either a human or kitchen scale depending on their size. Simply place them in a box or hold them while on the scales and subtract your weight or the box weight from the total.
