Which Personal Details Affect My Car Insurance Price?

Why Do Personal Details Matter?

Insurers calculate prices based on the risk associated with your personal situation. Even small updates to your details can have a big impact on your premium—sometimes lowering it!

1. Driving Licence

  • Have you switched from a foreign licence to a UK licence?

    • Example: Changing to a UK licence could lower your premium.

  • Did you provide the correct issue date?

    • The longer you’ve been driving (globally), the better your price may be.

  • Good to Know: Marshmallow considers all your driving experience worldwide—many UK insurers don’t.

Still using a foreign licence? That’s okay! Marshmallow covers many international licences for up to 12 months.

2. Annual Mileage

  • Has the distance you drive each year changed?

    • Example:

      • If you now work from home and drive 5,000 miles a year instead of 10,000, updating this could reduce your price.

  • Note: Honesty is critical. Incorrect mileage could affect future claims, and fewer miles doesn’t always guarantee a cheaper price.]

3. Address

  • Have you moved since you last updated your policy?

    • Insurance premiums vary by location, and even moving to a nearby town could impact your price.

4. Your Job and Job Title

  • Have you started a new job or changed your job title?

    • Example: “Software Developer” and “IT Specialist” may produce different quotes. Ensure your job title is accurate.

5. Additional Drivers

  • Are there drivers listed on your policy who no longer use your car?

    • Removing them might change your price—sometimes it goes up, sometimes down.

  • Also, make sure their personal details are correct.

6. Overnight Parking Location

  • Have you changed where you park your car at night?

    • Tip: The more secure the parking location (e.g., garage vs. street parking), the better for your premium.

7. Vehicle Ownership

  • Are you still the registered keeper of your car?

    • Important: If you’re no longer the registered keeper and don’t update this, your policy may become invalid in the event of a claim.
