What Should I Do If I Sell My Car?

Here’s how to update or cancel your Marshmallow policy after selling your car.

Updated over a week ago

Can I keep my policy if I’ve sold my car?

No. We can’t keep your policy active on a car you no longer own. You’ll need to do one of the following within 7 days:

Option 1: Change the car on your policy

If you’re buying a new car soon, you can update the vehicle on your policy. This keeps your policy active and avoids the need to cancel.

To do this:

  • Log in to your Marshmallow account or app

  • Head to the “Car Details” section

  • Add the new car information and follow the steps to update your cover

Option 2: Cancel your policy

If you’re not getting a new car soon, you’ll need to cancel your policy. You can always take out a new policy with us later.

To cancel:

  • Let us know through the app or chat

  • We’ll guide you through the cancellation process

What happens if I don’t update or cancel?

If we haven’t heard from you within 7 days of you telling us you sold your car, we’ll send a 7-day cancellation notice. This gives you a total of 14 days to:

  • Add a new car to your policy, or

  • Cancel the policy

If you haven’t taken action by then, your policy will be cancelled.

Key points to remember

  • You can’t insure a car you no longer own.

  • If you’re unsure what to do, it’s best to message us early—we can walk you through your options.

  • If your renewal is coming up, you can also let your policy expire instead of renewing it.
