Updated this week

What does 'driving off' or 'fleeing the scene' mean?

It means the other driver didn’t stop to give you their details after the accident. This is a criminal offence known as 'failing to stop'.

You are still covered and we’ll support you through the claims process.

What should I do immediately?

If someone drives off after hitting your vehicle:

  1. Stay calm and safe – Move to a safe place and do not attempt to chase them.

  2. Call the police on 101 to report the incident. If someone is hurt or you feel threatened, call 999.

  3. Write down anything you remember:

    • Registration number (even partial)

    • Make/model/colour of the vehicle

    • Time and location of the incident

    • Direction they drove off in

  4. Speak to any witnesses – Ask for their names and contact details.

  5. Take photos of the scene if safe to do so.

What information should I give Marshmallow?

Please tell us:

  • That the other driver left the scene

  • The crime reference number you received from the police

  • Any photos or witness information

Report the claim within 48 hours by calling our 24-hour Claims Helpline on 0800 060 8622.

What happens next?

We’ll investigate your claim and support you with repairs or settlement.

If you’re not at fault and we can confirm the third party was uninsured or unknown, your No Claims Discount (NCD) won’t be affected, and we’ll refund your excess once confirmed.
