Can Marshmallow help me release my impounded vehicle?

This article is for Marshmallow customers whose policy is active and whose car has been impounded after the policy started.

Updated this week

What do I need to release my car?

To release your vehicle from impound, the police need proof that you have valid insurance that covers the driver at the time of the stop. For Marshmallow to issue this:

  1. We must confirm that the vehicle was seized after your policy started

  2. We must be confident your policy is still valid and the person driving was covered

  3. You must provide a seizure notice from the police

We’ll use this information to decide if we can issue a document to help release your car.

When we can help

We may be able to endorse your policy and issue a certificate for vehicle release if:

  • The car was seized for a minor breach

  • You were listed on the policy and meet all conditions

  • You haven’t broken any serious policy rules

Our Underwriting team will confirm if we can do this after reviewing your case.

When we can’t help

We can’t issue a release if:

  • Your policy had already been cancelled or voided

  • The person driving wasn’t insured or was driving outside licence conditions

  • You refuse to give us full details or don’t provide the seizure notice

In these cases, you’ll need to get separate impound release insurance to recover your vehicle.

Can I keep my policy?

Sometimes, after reviewing your situation, we may need to cancel your policy. If this happens:

  • We’ll give you 7 days’ notice

  • You’ll get a reminder the day before cancellation

  • We’ll explain any refund you may be owed
