How does Legal Protection help after a non-fault accident?

This article is for: Policyholders who’ve been in a non-fault accident and want to understand how MLP applies.

Updated over 2 months ago

Motor Legal Protection (MLP) is designed to help you recover losses that aren’t covered by your standard insurance policy when the accident wasn’t your fault.

What is a non-fault accident?

A non-fault accident is when another driver is responsible for the incident. For example:

  • Your parked car was hit by another vehicle.

  • Another driver pulled out and collided with your vehicle.

What can you claim for under MLP?

MLP can help recover costs that the third-party insurer doesn’t pay directly, including:

  • Vehicle repair or hire charges (up to £50,000)

  • Loss of earnings if you couldn’t work due to the accident

  • Medical or rehabilitation fees

  • Personal belongings damaged in the accident

Real-life example

You’re rear-ended at traffic lights. The third party admits fault but won’t reimburse you for 2 weeks off work. MLP can cover the legal costs of claiming your lost income.

What do you need to make a claim?

  • The accident must be the fault of another insured driver.

  • You need a 51% or greater chance of success (determined by Winn Solicitors).

  • All claims must go through the 24/7 helpline: 0333 222 5804.
