Key rules to follow

When driving with a UK provisional licence, you must:

  • Be supervised at all times by someone who:

    • Is at least 21 years old

    • Has held a full driving licence for at least 3 years (UK, EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein)

    • Is qualified to drive the same type of vehicle

  • Display L plates clearly on the front and back of your car

  • Not drive on motorways unless you're with a qualified driving instructor in a dual-control car

Can I take driving lessons or a test?

Yes. You can:

  • Use your own vehicle for driving lessons if it’s unmodified

  • Take your driving test in your own car (as long as it meets DVSA rules)
