What’s the difference between a nominee and Power of Attorney?

This article is for customers who want someone to manage their policy on their behalf, either informally or legally.

Updated today

You can allow someone else to help manage your Marshmallow policy in two ways:

Nominee (Third Party Authority)

A nominee is someone you informally appoint—like a friend, family member or partner—to speak to Marshmallow on your behalf.

What they can do:

  • Contact Marshmallow via live chat

  • Request certain changes (e.g., address, vehicle, mileage)

  • Help you manage day-to-day admin

What they can’t do:

  • Cancel your policy without your permission

  • Make changes that increase your premium by more than £200

  • Change your policy’s email address

You can add or remove a nominee at any time by contacting us.

Power of Attorney (PoA)

Power of Attorney is a legal arrangement that gives someone full authority to make financial and legal decisions on your behalf.

If you hold Power of Attorney for a policyholder:

  • Contact our team with proof of the legal arrangement

  • We may require supporting documents, such as the signed PoA form

Once verified, the PoA holder will be able to manage the policy fully, including actions that nominees cannot take.

Which one should I choose?

  • Nominee: For everyday help with managing the policy.

  • Power of Attorney: When you need someone to have full legal authority over your affairs.

If you're unsure which one is right for your situation, chat to us and we’ll guide you.
