Do I have to get my car repaired after an accident?

For Marshmallow policyholders who’ve been in an accident and are unsure about repairing their car.

Updated this week

You don’t always need to repair your car

If your car has been in an incident, it's your choice whether or not to repair it—as long as it’s still safe and legal to drive.

You only need to repair your car through Marshmallow if:

  • You want us to cover the repair costs through a claim.

  • You want to use a courtesy car (depending on your policy).

  • The damage to your vehicle exceeds the cost of your excess

Can I repair my car privately?

Yes! If you're not making a claim, you're free to:

  • Use your own repairer.

  • Fix the car yourself.

  • Not repair it at all, if it's cosmetic.

Things to keep in mind:

  • If you later change your mind and decide to claim, you may not be reimbursed for private repair costs.

  • Marshmallow can’t guarantee the quality of third-party repairs.

  • If the damage is serious, it’s safest to let our approved repairers take care of it.

What if my car is written off?

If your car is declared a total loss but you want to keep it:

  • You’ll need to make sure it's roadworthy before driving it again.

  • We’ll ask for an independent engineer’s report within 30 days to prove it’s safe to be back on the road.
