Can I drive someone else’s car with my Marshmallow policy?

For Marshmallow car insurance customers who want to know if their policy allows them to drive a vehicle they don’t own.

Updated yesterday

Summary

You can only drive another person's car if you're on the Marshmallow Plus policy—and even then, this comes with strict limitations. If you're on a Lightest, Essential, or Original policy, you're not covered to drive other vehicles.

Am I covered to drive someone else’s car?

You’re only insured to drive other cars if all of the following are true:

  • You have a Marshmallow Plus policy

  • You’re the main policyholder (not an additional driver)

  • The other car is not:

    • Owned by you or someone in your household

    • A hire, rental, or courtesy car

  • You are driving the car with the owner’s permission

If you don’t meet all of these conditions, you are not insured to drive the other car, even if you’re on Marshmallow Plus.

What type of cover applies when driving someone else’s car?

If you qualify under the above rules and are driving someone else’s car with a Marshmallow Plus policy, you’re only covered with third-party insurance.

What does third-party insurance mean?

It covers:

  • Injuries to other people

  • Damage to other people’s property

It does not cover:

  • Any damage to the car you are driving

  • Any injuries you may suffer in the event of an accident

I’m on a Marshmallow Lightest, Essential, or Original policy—can I add cover for driving other cars?

No. These plans do not include cover for driving other vehicles. Unfortunately, this cover cannot be added mid-policy either.

To gain this benefit, you’d need to upgrade to a Marshmallow Plus policy at your next renewal, if eligible.

How can I check if I'm insured to drive other cars?

To see if you're covered to drive other vehicles, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Marshmallow app or log in to your web account

  2. View your Policy Schedule and Certificate of Motor Insurance

Look specifically at your Certificate of Motor Insurance. If you’re covered, it will include this line:

“The policyholder is also covered to drive another private motor car within the policy limits in extraordinary circumstances. This cover is limited to third party damages only.”

If you don’t see this wording, then you're not covered to drive other cars under your current policy.
