FAQs on Community Feedback:

Q. Why is the County of Maui asking for comments on the CDBG-DR draft Action Plan?

A. The County want to make sure we get it right. Our goal is to help Lahaina recover. Your feedback on the draft Action Plan will improve the programs. Community comments are included in the Action Plan that is sent to HUD. Before we submit to HUD, the draft Action Plan will be updated to account for these comments.

Q. What is the deadline to submit comments on the CDBG-DR draft Action Plan?

A. All feedback, including surveys and comments, must be received by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. This includes the online feedback survey and mailed-in surveys.

Q. When are housing projects going to start?

A. Beginning with Phase 1, single-family housing construction is expected to begin at the end of this year.

FAQs for Infrastructure, Public Facilities Program:

Q. How will the County use these funds to improve water infrastructure, traffic and parking?

A. The County will prioritize facilities and infrastructure that were lost or damaged first. Additionally, the County plans to fund infrastructure that supports additional housing units and economic revitalization.

Q. Will the funding allocated cover all the infrastructure needs?

A. No. The CDBG-DR funds are only one funding source of many. The County is working diligently to obtain more funds to address the many unmet needs.

FAQs for Public Services

Q. What Public Services may be eligible for CDBG-DR funding after the Action Plan is approved?

A. Job training, kupuna services, mental health and supportive health care services.

Q. When will decisions be made on the criteria for selecting public services to be funded with CDBG-DR funds from HUD?

A. These decisions are tied to the Action Plan being approved, and the County anticipates sharing these details later this summer.

Q. Since health care and mental health are important for the community, especially following the wildfires, how can these be addressed using public services program funding?

A. These decisions are tied to the Action Plan being approved, and the County anticipates sharing these details later this summer.

FAQs for Mitigation

Q. How will the County share information on Mitigation program plans, once the Action Plan gets approved?

A. Mauirecovers.org will continue to be updated regularly. We will also have many more community meetings to discuss mitigation and other programs.

Q. Why does HUD require the final Action Plan have funding for mitigation activities?

A. HUD wants communities to become more resilient against future disasters.

Q. Could mitigation or infrastructure funding be used for firebreaks or helping homeowners to have access to fire-resistant building materials?

A. Yes, CDBG-DR funding may be used in this way and the County will look carefully at these options when making tough decisions on what to include within the final Action Plan.
