Overview

Auction Types in Maxanet are labels you attach to each auction — like Online Only, Personal Property, Real Estate, or Antiques — so you can segment your auction calendar, drive bidders to specific subsets, and share targeted URLs. A single auction can have multiple types, and you control how the public Category Label dropdown behaves on the calendar page (Type, Category, Location, Seller, or State).

How to add a new Auction Type

There are two ways to create a new Auction Type in Maxanet. Option 1: from the left-hand menu, choose Auction Types, then click the green Add button in the upper-right corner of the page. Enter the Type name (for example Online Only, Real Estate, Antiques, Personal Property) and save. Option 2: from inside an Add/Edit Auction page, the Types dropdown has an inline option to add a new Type on the fly. Either way, once a Type is saved, it appears in the Types dropdown on every Add/Edit Auction page.

How to assign multiple Types to one auction

On the Add/Edit Auction page, the Types field is a multi-select dropdown — you can assign as many Auction Types to a single auction as are relevant. For example, a single auction could be tagged Online Only, Antiques, and Estate simultaneously, and it would show up in filtered views for all three types.

How to control the public Category Label dropdown

In Admin → Configurations → Public Page Configuration, the Content section has a dropdown called Category Label. Options are Choose Type, Choose Category, Choose Location, Choose Seller, and Choose State. Whichever option you pick becomes the dropdown menu label bidders see on your public calendar page (the page showing your current auctions). Bidders use this dropdown to make one or more selections, click the Go button, and see only the auctions that match their selection.

How to share filtered auction pages via static URLs

The filtered calendar page (after a bidder picks one or more types) has a static URL that you can copy and share. Clients use this for marketing and navigation — for example, linking from your homepage directly to the Real Estate filter, or from a Personal Property newsletter directly to the Personal Property filter. Larger clients with multiple physical auction locations often set Category Label to Choose Location or Choose State and drive traffic to each location's filtered set individually.

Common questions

Can a single auction have more than one Auction Type?

Yes. The Types dropdown on the Add/Edit Auction page is multi-select. Assign as many types as are relevant to the auction.

How do I use Auction Types for marketing to specific bidder segments?

Create Types that match your audience segments (Antiques, Firearms, Heavy Equipment, etc.), assign the appropriate types to each auction, and share the filtered calendar URL in targeted emails or social posts so bidders land directly on the matching auctions.

I run auctions in multiple states — can I filter by state?

Yes. Set the Category Label dropdown in Public Page Configuration to 'Choose State' or 'Choose Location', create Auction Types matching your states/locations, and tag each auction with the right state. Bidders can then filter the calendar by state directly.

Will changing the Category Label setting affect existing auctions?

No. Changing the Category Label only changes what the public-facing dropdown filters by. Your existing auction data and tags are not changed.
