If you want to run recharges on any period other than monthly, you will want to use the 'custom' recharge period functionality.
This is helpful when you want to run recharges weekly, fortnightly, or on a 4-4-5 basis.
How to select a custom date range
This is available from inside Recharger's Calculation section.
When you click "+ New" a pop-up will appear. It will default to "Month" but you can toggle to "Custom".
Once in custom, you can select any date range that you would like to run recharges for, like so:
Important considerations
When running recharges using custom dates (i.e. not month by month), its important to note:
You cannot run recharges for periods that crossover
i.e. Once you run recharges from the 1st to the 7th, the next available option will be from the 8th. There is no way to accidentally run multiple recharges for the same date.
If you are running recharges multiple times per month, its unlikely your Xero file will be "locked" after your recharges are run. This means there is an increased likelihood of 'late' transactions coming into Xero and being missed from your recharges.
Keep this in mind. Do what you can to minimise late transactions.
If a late transaction comes in, you can always update the original recharge to capture that late transaction. Refer to this article on re-calculating and updating recharges for more information.
You cannot run some of your recharges on a custom period, and others on a monthly basis.
i.e. operating costs should be recharged once a month, but payroll should be recharged fortnightly.
A custom recharge period (i.e. a fortnight) will pick up and recharge everything (per your recharge rules) that falls within that period.
A potential workaround would be to ensure anything that should be recharged at month end is dated, in Xero, on the last day of the month. That way it will be captured in the last custom recharge period of that month.
Using custom recharge periods with Google Sheets
Refer to this article on how to use Google sheets for recharging for more information on setting up Google Sheets.
If you're using this approach, just note that each column heading in the Google Sheet will have a date (i.e. 30-Apr-2024 in screenshot below).
If you are running your recharges on a custom date range, i.e. 1st to 7th of June, and you want certain data to be captured in that period, just be sure to update the column heading as required, like so:
