Setting up & troubleshooting your Epson TM-M30II receipt printer

How to connect your Epson TM-M30II to Meadow via USB or Bluetooth, set up a cash drawer, and fix the most common printing issues.

Updated over a week ago

The Epson TM-M30II is a compact receipt printer that connects to your iPad via USB or Bluetooth. USB is the recommended connection method for reliability. Bluetooth is available as an alternative if your setup requires it.

What you'll need

  • Epson TM-M30II printer

  • iPad with the latest version of iOS

  • Meadow POS app installed

  • Receipt paper (3-1/8" thermal roll)

  • For USB: Lightning to USB adapter (or USB-C, depending on your iPad model)

  • Optional: Epson iPrint app (free, App Store) for printer management

Setting up via USB (recommended)

  1. Load receipt paper and power on the printer

  2. Connect the printer to your iPad using a USB cable and the appropriate adapter for your iPad model

  3. In the Meadow app: Menu → Manage Devices → Receipt Printer → select "TM-M30II"

  4. Print a test receipt to confirm the connection

⚠️ Note: Each printer connects to one iPad at a time. If you have multiple registers, each needs its own printer.

Setting up via Bluetooth (alternative)

  1. Load receipt paper and power on the printer

  2. Put the printer into Bluetooth pairing mode: press and hold the pairing button on the side of the printer for 3–5 seconds until the LED blinks blue

  3. On your iPad: Settings → Bluetooth → wait for "TM-M30II" to appear, then tap to pair

  4. In the Meadow app: Menu → Manage Devices → Receipt Printer → select "TM-M30II"

  5. Print a test receipt to confirm the connection

Connecting a cash drawer

Your cash drawer connects to the receipt printer via cable — not directly to the iPad.

  • The cable has two different-sized plugs: the small plug (phone jack) goes into the printer, the large plug goes into the drawer

  • The printer sends a signal to open the drawer when a cash transaction completes in Meadow

  • If the drawer won't open, check the small internal cable behind the money tray inside the drawer

Troubleshooting

Printer won't appear in iPad Bluetooth

  1. Make sure the printer is in pairing mode (LED blinking blue)

  2. On iPad: Settings → Bluetooth — if "TM-M30II" is listed but grayed out, tap the (i) icon → Forget This Device

  3. Turn Bluetooth off and back on

  4. Power cycle the printer

  5. Re-attempt pairing

Printer is connected but Meadow doesn't recognize it

This is the most common issue. Being connected via USB or paired via Bluetooth is not enough — you must also select the printer inside Meadow.

  1. In the Meadow app: Menu → Manage Devices → Receipt Printer

  2. Select "TM-M30II" from the list

  3. If it doesn't appear, check the cable connection (USB) or forget and re-pair (Bluetooth), then try again

Printer stopped working after a Meadow app update

App updates can cause the printer to become deselected in Meadow.

  1. In the Meadow app: Menu → Manage Devices → Receipt Printer

  2. Re-select "TM-M30II"

  3. Print a test receipt to confirm

Printer prints intermittently or cuts out mid-transaction

  • For USB: check that the cable is fully seated at both ends

  • For Bluetooth: forget the printer from all iPads via Bluetooth settings, reset the printer (see below), and re-pair

  • If the issue persists, delete and reinstall the Meadow app, then re-select the printer in Manage Devices

Cash drawer not opening

  • Check that the cable is fully seated in both the printer and the drawer

  • Confirm the transaction was processed as cash in Meadow (the drawer only opens on cash transactions)

  • Check the small internal cable behind the money tray inside the drawer

  • If the issue persists, delete and reinstall the Meadow app

Factory resetting the Epson TM-M30II

  1. Power off the printer

  2. Press and hold the feed button (top of printer)

  3. While holding the feed button, power the printer back on

  4. Release the feed button when the printer begins printing a status sheet

  5. The printer will print a self-test and reset to factory defaults

FAQs

Should I use USB or Bluetooth?

USB is recommended. It's more reliable and eliminates the Bluetooth pairing issues that are the most common source of printer problems. Use Bluetooth only if your setup doesn't support a USB connection.

My iPad shows the Epson connected in Bluetooth, but it's not printing. What do I do?

Bluetooth pairing in iOS settings and selecting the printer in Meadow are two separate steps. Go to Menu → Manage Devices → Receipt Printer in the Meadow app and select the TM-M30II. That's the step most people miss.

Can I use one Epson printer with multiple iPads?

No. The TM-M30II connects to one iPad at a time. If you have multiple registers, each register needs its own printer.

My printer worked fine yesterday and now it's not printing. Nothing changed.

Start with the basics: re-select the printer in Meadow (Menu → Manage Devices → Receipt Printer). If that doesn't work, check your cable connection (USB) or re-pair via Bluetooth. If still no luck, delete and reinstall the Meadow app, then re-select the printer.

Do I need the Epson iPrint app?

No, it's optional. Meadow handles printing directly. Epson iPrint is useful if you want to rename the printer, run test prints, or manage settings — especially helpful in multi-printer setups.
