If a medical customer has a government-issued MMIC (Medical Marijuana Identification Card), they do not have to pay sales taxes.

Updated over 3 months ago

California's tax-collecting body (the CDTFA) has determined that with the passage of Prop 64, any medical customer with a state-issued medical cannabis card (MMIC) is eligible for an exemption from sales tax.

Local taxes may or may not apply depending on local tax laws.

A doctor's recommendation is NOT the same as the MMIC. Learn more about the MMIC program here.

To make this as painless as possible, Meadow as added a “tax exempt” button to the Order process.

Just click on the “Tax Exempt” box at the bottom of the page, next to the total order value, and taxes will be excluded.

This will be reflected in Reports, so that in Order reports the tax column will display “0” for these transactions.

One important point to remember: the CDTFA requires that you record the state-issued ID number for tax free transactions. Please put this number into the Notes section for each order that is tax free or record it in the MMIC # under "Verifications" in the customer profile.

We recommend entering the MMIC expiration date into the "verification" expiration date. This ensures that your team are prompted to review the tax exempt status when the customer's MMIC expires.
