Custom code lets you go beyond MV’s built-in design and create tools for your members, like quizzes, calculators, checklists, and countdown timers. More and more account owners are writing this code with AI tools, and that’s great.
This article covers what works well, what to avoid, and what you’re responsible for when you add custom code to your account.
Where custom code works best
MV gives you places to add your own HTML, CSS, and JavaScript inside your content:
Lessons and modules
Pages
Product promo text
Product overviews
Code in these areas only changes its own content, so it’s the safest way to customize. Good examples:
Styled sections, callout boxes, and step cards
Quizzes, calculators, and generators
Checklists that save progress
Countdown timers
What to avoid: changing how MV’s features work
Some code goes further and changes how MemberVault itself works. Examples:
Adding categories, filters, or new fields to the community
Changing the checkout, login, member dashboard, navigation, or admin area
Site-wide CSS or JavaScript that overrides MV’s own styles or behavior
Scripts that reach into parts of the page MV provides, like the header or menus
These changes might work today, but MV’s features are updated regularly, and code built around how a feature currently works can stop working after an update. It can also stop working when your AI tool changes or when you make later edits of your own. When that happens, it can affect what your members see, and in some cases cause lost data.
Under Section 31 of our Terms, changes like these are made at your own risk.

Custom code isn’t covered by support
MemberVault support can’t help with custom code of any kind. This includes code:
You write yourself or get from an AI tool
From someone you hire
From the Template Library
From MemberVault trainings
From Your MV Sidekick
From examples in our help articles
If you’re on a paid plan and using Your MV Sidekick, it can help you troubleshoot code it wrote and suggest options that work inside MV’s features.
Our support team may ask you to remove custom code while we help with another issue, so we can rule it out.
Sending data outside of MV
Some tools send what members type or click to a place outside MemberVault, like a Google Sheet, a form tool, a webhook, or another server.
Once data leaves MV, you’re responsible for keeping it secure. MemberVault can’t verify the security of where it goes and isn’t responsible for it.
Before adding a tool like this:
Consider keeping the data in MV. Quiz questions and intake forms store answers inside your account, where they’re protected and can trigger actions.
Send only what you need. Never send sensitive information.
Tell your members where their information goes, if your privacy policy or local laws require it.
Never put passwords or API keys in your code
Anyone who views a page can see its code. Never include passwords, API keys, tokens, or private webhook links in code you add to MV. If a tool can’t work without one of these, it can’t be built safely this way.
Before you add custom code
Backup your content. Save a copy of anything you’re about to change.
Preview before publishing. Check it on desktop and mobile.
Keep a copy of the code somewhere outside MV, so you can remove it or add it back easily.
Add one thing at a time, so you know what caused it if something looks off.
If something stops working
Remove or turn off the custom code you added most recently.
Check whether the issue goes away.
If it’s code from Your MV Sidekick or another AI tool, bring the problem back to that tool to fix.
If the issue continues with the custom code removed, contact support through the chat in your account.
