How to use Offline Digital ID Cards in Minga

Offline digital ID cards help students open the Minga app faster and display an ID card in locations with unreliable Wi-Fi or cell service.

Offline digital ID cards work by loading a cached version of the student’s digital ID in the Minga app when the device has no internet connection, and the ID automatically updates to the live version once connection is restored. This guide will walk you through what offline IDs show and do not show, how to enable offline stickers, and what happens when staff scan an offline ID for check-in.

How to use Offline Digital ID Cards

Students can display an offline digital ID card by opening the Minga app when their device has no internet connection, which loads an offline cached version until the device reconnects.

Step-by-step guide to using an offline digital ID card

  1. Open the Minga app
    ○ The offline ID feature works in the Minga app and is not available in an internet browser.

  2. View the offline digital ID card
    ○ When the device has no internet connection, the offline version of the ID loads first.

  3. Restore an internet connection
    ○ When Wi-Fi or cell service is restored, the ID automatically updates to the live version.

Important: An OFFLINE ID will not show the live clock counter or any ID Stickers - unless you "Enable Offline Stickers."

You can also enable stickers on offline digital ID cards by turning on Enable Offline Stickers in ID Manager under the Settings tab. This makes sure that you still see all of the privileges or restrictions that a student is entitled to.

Enable Offline Stickers

Offline ID Cards will not show stickers. You can "Enable Offline Stickers" to allow cached stickers to show on Offline IDs. These stickers are accurate from the last time the user had internet. If their stickers have been updated since they lost connection, the offline stickers may not be accurate for a visual check.

Step-by-step guide to enabling offline stickers

  1. Log in to app.minga.io
    ○ Only users with the role of Owner will be able to access the Settings tab.

  2. Open ID Manager
    ○ Click ID Manager from your dashboard navigation.

  3. Click Settings
    ○ The Settings tab displays ID configuration toggles.

  4. Navigate to the ID Settings area.

    ○ This area is where you can customize multiple features of the digital ID.

  5. .Toggle ON the setting for Enable Offline Stickers
    ○ Turning on Enable Offline Stickers allows cached stickers to display on offline IDs.

Note: The stickers are accurate from the last time the user had internet. If their stickers have been updated since they lost connection, the offline stickers may not be accurate for a visual check.

Scanning Offline IDs

An offline digital ID card can still be used to check a student in because the offline ID uses the same barcode as the live ID, and the scanning device checks up-to-date information at the time of scanning.

  • How scanning stays accurate: The scanning device checks current records during check-in, including sticker membership such as NO ACCESS STICKER, event tickets, and any other sticker membership connected to Check-In reasons.

  • What the student sees vs. what the scanner checks: The student’s offline screen can show cached information, while the scanning device validates current information during the check-in scan.

Why is there a Scan Delay?

When scanning multiple digital IDs, you may notice a slight delay. The scan delay exists to prevent multiple scans in a short time and reduce duplicate records, which helps keep check-ins accurate.

Troubleshooting

  1. Issue: A student cannot load their ID card on a web browser while offline.
Solution: You can use offline digital ID cards by opening the Minga and navigating to MyTools>View ID.

  2. Issue: Stickers do not appear on an offline ID card.
Solution: Ensure that the setting Enable Offline Stickers in ID ManagerSettings is toggled ON and enabled.

  3. Issue: Stickers shown on an offline ID card look outdated.
Solution: You can refresh sticker accuracy by restoring internet on the student’s device so the live ID loads, because offline stickers only reflect the last time the device had internet.

  4. Issue: Staff see a short delay between scans.
Solution: You can reduce duplicate scan records by allowing the built-in scan delay to complete, since the delay is designed to prevent multiple scans in a short time.
