Escalate Overdue Consequences or Assign Additional Consequences Automatically

Automatically assign escalated or additional consequences when students miss due dates.

You can automatically escalate or assign additional consequences by enabling a due date on the original consequence, turning on the overdue action setting, and selecting either Escalate Consequence or Additional Consequence in the consequence’s edit settings. This feature is especially useful for schools that use time-bound consequences like detentions and want consistent accountability.

Set Up Consequences

You can automate follow-up consequences by adding a due date and configuring what happens when the due date passes without completion.

First, you'll need to define the consequences you plan to use, such as lunch detention or after-school detention. Ensure that you have set up and enabled consequences.

Escalating Overdue Consequences

Step-by-step Guide to Escalating an Overdue Consequence

  1. Navigate to BehaviorsConsequences.
    ○ Locate the consequence that should escalate if overdue.

  2. Click the Edit icon (pencil) on the consequence.
    ○ The consequence edit screen opens.

  3. Toggle on Enable action for overdue consequence
    ○ The overdue action options appear after this setting is enabled.

  4. Select Escalate Consequence
    ○ Escalation replaces the overdue consequence with a more severe consequence.

  5. Select the escalated consequence from the dropdown.
    ○ Choose the more severe consequence you created earlier.

  6. Configure the escalated consequence due date (optional)
    ○ Turn on Enable Due Date on the escalated consequence if you want the escalated consequence to also become overdue and trigger another overdue action.

  7. Click Save
    ○ The consequence now escalates automatically when the due date passes without completion.

Tip: You can create a multi-step escalation chain by enabling due dates and overdue actions on each escalated consequence, as long as each step has a clearly defined follow-up consequence.

Adding Additional Consequences

You can assign an additional consequence by configuring an overdue action that adds a second consequence when the due date passes, while keeping the original overdue item visible for follow-up with the student.

Step-by-step Guide to Assigning an Additional Consequence

  1. Navigate to BehaviorsConsequences.
    ○ Locate the consequence that should trigger an extra consequence when overdue.

  2. Click the Edit icon (pencil) on the consequence
    ○ The consequence edit screen opens.

  3. Toggle on Enable action for overdue consequence
    ○ The overdue action settings appear.

  4. Select Additional Consequence
    ○ Additional consequence assigns a second consequence when the first becomes overdue.

  5. Select the additional consequence from the dropdown
    ○ Choose the extra consequence you created earlier.

  6. Toggle on Enable Due Date
    ○ A due date is required for the consequence to become overdue.

  7. Click Save
    ○ The consequence now assigns an additional consequence automatically when the due date passes without completion.

Monitor Overdue Consequences

You can track overdue consequences and communicate with students using built-in notifications and reporting views.

Once a consequence is overdue, Minga automatically notifies students. It also enables Owners, Managers, and Teachers/ Staff (if given permission)to view overdue consequences through the Consequence History report, the Overdue Consequences Report, or a summary in the Student Report within the Behavior reporting tab. This transparency allows for direct communication to address the overdue consequences.

Additional Features or Settings

Due Dates and Overdue Tracking

You can control whether a consequence can become overdue by enabling due dates.

  • Enable Due Date: You can turn on this setting so a consequence becomes overdue if it is not completed by the selected date.

  • Enable action for overdue consequence: You can turn on this setting to automate follow-up behavior after a consequence becomes overdue.

Escalated vs Additional Consequences

You can choose a follow-up strategy that matches your discipline policy.

Option

What it does

Typical use case

Escalate Consequence

You can replace the overdue consequence with a more severe consequence.

When missing the consequence increases severity (for example, lunch detention escalates to after-school detention).

Additional Consequence

You can assign an extra consequence when the original becomes overdue.

When you want to preserve the original item while adding a new accountability step.

Important: Your escalated or additional consequence must already exist in BehaviorsConsequences before it can be selected in the overdue action dropdown.
