Creating a Test Student

Teachers and Admins often need a "dummy" account to show students how to use the app or to test if a specific setting is active. Creating a test student ensures your school's analytics and live hall pass dashboards remain accurate during training.

Step-by-step Guide to Creating a Test Student

  1. Navigate to People from the main menu.

  2. Click the Add Person button to open the user creation form.

  3. Enter a name in the First Name and Last Name fields.
Tip: Use a generic name like "Test Student" so it is easily identifiable in your lists.

  4. Input a unique email address in the Email field.
Tip: Use your work email with "+test" added (e.g., bonnie+test@minga.io). This allows you to receive notifications at your actual inbox while Minga treats it as a new account.

  5. Select Student from the Role dropdown menu.

  6. Assign a Grade and enter a unique ID Number.

  7. Check that the setting Include user in SIS sync is toggled OFF so that the profile is not removed in the nightly sync.

  8. Click the Save button to create the profile.

Adding Parent Contact Details

You can test your school's automated notification system by adding your own contact information to the test student's parent fields. This ensures you know exactly what parents receive when a behavior or pass notification is triggered.

Step-by-step Guide to Adding Parent Contact Details

  1. Locate your test student in People and click the Edit (pencil) icon.

  2. Scroll down to the Parent Details section.

  3. Enter your personal or work email in the Parent Email Address field.

  4. Enter your mobile number in the Parent Phone Number field.

  5. Toggle the Opt-in for parent to receive behavior notifications via SMS/Email switch to the On position.

  6. Click the Save button to update the student's contact settings.

Testing the Student View

Once your test student is created, you can use those credentials to log in at app.minga.io. When signing in, you should select the Login with username and password option to access the student-side dashboard. This is the most effective way to see how your Flex periods or Hall Pass limits appear to a student in real-time.

FAQs

How do I see what a student sees in Minga?

You can see the student view by logging into the Minga app using the email and password associated with the test student you created.

Can I use my own email for a test student?

You can use your own email for a test student by using the "plus" trick (e.g., yourname+test@school.org), which lets you create a separate account that still sends emails to your primary inbox.

Will test hall passes show up in my school's live reports?

Yes, test hall passes will appear in live reports, which is why we recommend naming the student "Test" so you can easily filter them out or ignore them during data reviews.

Troubleshooting

Problem: Email already in use.

Solution: If you receive an error that the email is taken, ensure you haven't already used that specific "+test" alias for another person in the People list.

Problem:Cannot log in.

Solution: Ensure you are using the Login with username and password button rather than your school's SSO (Single Sign-On) if the test account was created manually.
