Purpose of MNTN Site Visitor Segments

MNTN's Site Visitor Segments (previously 1st Party Audiences) capability empowers you to reconnect with users who have previously explored your website.

By retargeting these users, you can achieve multiple objectives:

✅ Turn past visitors into customers

✅ Boost the volume of purchases made by existing users

✅ Leverage the opportunity to promote flash sales or other special offers.

Navigating Your Site Visitor Segments

Site Visitor Segments are groups of individuals who visited your website and completed similar actions.

Use the Universal Audience Builder to make any number of site visitor segments is where all the necessary customization for your site visitors takes place

1️⃣ Once you're logged into MNTN, navigate to the Audience Dashboard

2️⃣ Select Segments

3️⃣ Select Site Visitors from the dropdown menu

4️⃣ Click on the blue + New Audience button to build your segment

💡 Note: Keep in mind that 1st-party audience data populates on a rolling 30-day window by default.

Customizing Your Site Visitor Segments

Customizing your site visitor segments gives you all the controls to search for and define the users you are looking to target, whether by:

⭐️ Time spent on site

⭐️ How they interacted with your site

⭐️ And more.

💡 Note: Though your site visitor segments must include a minimum of 1,000 users in order to save, it's important to note that small audiences of this size make it statistically challenging to generate any views or clicks higher than a single digit.

Pro Tip: There is technically no limit on the number of audiences you can create, however, we recommend keeping track of the segments you've created and how many campaigns are targeting them to avoid over-saturation.

Understanding the User Visit Window

Under the User Visit Window, you can use specific filters to define your segment based on the time spent interacting with your site.

The panel for configuring these settings allows you to use the sliding scale or to enter the desired values directly into the following text fields:

When did they last visit?

Allows you to set the historical time range within which you are looking for a site visit behavior (e.g. visited 0 to 10 days ago). 0 day must be selected as the "Start Day" in order for this audience to dynamically update. Any begin date after Day 0 will create a static snapshot of an audience, and the audience will not dynamically populate due to pixel limitations

How often did they visit?

Allows you to set a range of site visit frequency (e.g. visited between 2 to 5 times).

What is their average visit time?

Allows you to set the average duration of each site visit (e.g. visited for 5 to 10 minutes).

When did they last convert?

Allows you to set a historical time range within which you are looking for conversion behavior (e.g. converted 5 to 10 days ago).

How often did they convert?

Allows you to set the frequency of conversion behavior (e.g. converted 2 to 3 times).

💡 Note: All 1st party audience data is updated on a rolling 30-day look-back window.

Pro Tip: If you want to create an audience using the "When did they last visit" toggle but would like the "Start Date" to be after "Day 0," try leveraging an exclusion segment instead.

For example, if you wanted to target users who have been to the site in the last 15-30 days but want the audience to dynamically populate, you could create an audience targeting users who have been to your site within the last 0-14 day, and then layer this segment in as an exclusion to your audience. This setup will allow the site visitors to dynamically repopulate on a rolling basis while still achieving your goals and working around our current limitations.

Understanding the User Activity Window

Under the User Activity Window, define your target audience segment based on the specific actions a user took while navigating through your website.

The panel for configuring these settings allows you to use the sliding scale or to enter the desired values directly into the following text fields:

What did they shop for?

Allows you to refine your search to only users that viewed specific Product Categories, Product Brands, Product Names, Product Page URLs.

You can customize your search string by separating the terms by:

  1. Spaces or Commas (,): These act as "OR"

  2. Semicolons (;): These act as "AND"

  3. Quotation Marks (" ") around your search terms: These will look for exact matches on your search term

We can also map custom Var Additionals to pull into this field.

Example: "tennis shoes", shirts, or even custom pixel-built Var Additional parameters (existing_user=true).

If using Product Page URLs, you should only include the sub-navigation after the trailing slash.

Example: if you want to target users that visited https://mountain.com/performance-tv/optimization/ you should place only "performance-tv/optimization/" in the field.

How many pages did they view?

Allows you to set a range for the number of pages that the site visitor viewed.

Example: viewed between 2 to 5 pages.

What is the cart value?

Allows you to specify a monetary range for the total value of products placed in the shopping cart.

Example: cart value is between $50 to $250.

What was the average viewed value?

Allows you to specify a monetary range for the average value of products viewed by the site visitor.

Example: site visitor viewed between $50 to $250 worth of products on average.

What is the cart quantity?

Allows you to specify a range for the total number of products placed into the shopping cart.

Example: site visitor has placed between 2 to 5 products in their shopping cart.

What is the average purchase amount?

Allows you to specify a monetary range for the average purchase amount by the site visitor.

Example: site visitor has purchased between $50 to $250 worth of products on average.

Once all of the changes have been made to your desired fields:

1️⃣ Name your site visitor segment

2️⃣ Save your segment via the green "Save" button.

Editing Existing Site Visitor Segments

If at any point, you'd like to make simple adjustments to a pre-existing site visitor segment, that can be done from the Audience Dashboard.

To make edits to your site visitor segment:

1️⃣ Click the kebab menu on the associated site visitor segment.

2️⃣ Select Edit from the dropdown menu to make the desired changes to the time or activity parameters.

Duplicating Site Visitor Segments

Should you want to make small adjustments to a site visitor segment - for a new campaign or to replace an existing audience --, you always have the option to duplicate your site visitor segment.

This is an easy way to utilize the same parameters of an existing audience and add in any necessary changes for the new version. To complete this:

1️⃣ Click the kebab menu on the associated site visitor segment.

2️⃣ Select Duplicate from the dropdown menu.

3️⃣ Name your new, duplicated audience. It will need a name different from the original version.

4️⃣ The new duplicate will now be added to the audience list, where you can edit the audience as needed.
