Why are some ETFs missing data or not displayed correctly on Morningstar Investor?

Why are some ETFs missing data or not displayed correctly on Morningstar Investor?

Morningstar Investor provides a range of tools and data for analyzing stocks and funds, but certain limitations exist when it comes to displaying data for specific ETFs. Below, we explain two common scenarios where ETF data may not appear as expected:

1. Chi-X Australia (CXA) ETFs and the Portfolio X-Ray Tool

The Portfolio X-Ray tool supports only ETFs listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). ETFs listed on Chi-X Australia (CXA), such as GIFL or IETH, are not currently included in the X-Ray analysis. As a result, even if you add these ETFs to your portfolio via Sharesight, they will not be reflected in the Portfolio X-Ray analysis. This limitation is due to the tool's current design and data coverage.

2. Fund-of-Funds ETFs (e.g., IVV) and Underlying Holdings Data

Certain ETFs, like IVV, are treated as fund-of-funds within Morningstar’s data framework. For these types of securities, the platform does not display the underlying company-level holdings and market weight breakdowns in the same way it does for standard equity ETFs. This is why you may see detailed holdings for many ETFs but not for fund-of-funds like IVV.

Summary

These limitations stem from the platform's data framework and tool design. While Morningstar Investor offers robust tools for fund analysis, understanding these constraints can help you better interpret the available data and set appropriate expectations.
