Click rage events happen when a user rapidly clicks multiple times on the same element, which can indicate frustration or an issue with the page’s interactivity.
Dead Click events are triggered when a user clicks on an element that appears interactive, but no action occurs. For example, text or image elements that look like links but when clicked, do not result in any action, which can cause confusion or frustration for your users.
However, sometimes these events might be false positives, caused by intentional or expected behavior on certain elements. Now, you can mute these events for specific elements across your website to improve the accuracy of your site's friction score.
Mouseflow provides three ways to mute click rage and dead click events:
Through Session Replay (for non-technical users)
Through Heatmaps (for non-technical users)
Through Website Settings (for technical users)
For Non-Technical Users: Muting Friction Events via Session Replay and Heatmaps
Muting from Session Replay
Open a Session Replay: Navigate to a Session Replay that shows a click rage or dead click event.
Find the Friction Event on the Timeline: During playback, friction events appear on the timeline for easy identification.
Mute Directly from the Timeline: Hover on the Click Rage or Dead Click event (lightning bolt icon) and select “Mute/Unmute” from the options.
Confirmation Pop-up: A pop-up will appear, showing the CSS selector for that element and confirming that it will be muted/unmuted sitewide.
Confirm Changes in Website Settings: Any element muted from the Session Replay timeline will automatically appear in the Website Settings under the muting section, allowing you to manage it from there if needed.
💡Muted click rage tooltips for future sessions will be displayed in gray while existing ones will remain yellow.
Note: Administrators and Account Owners can edit, while other roles see a non-interactive view.
Muting from Heatmaps
Access Heatmap List: Go to the Click Heatmaps.
Mute/Unmute from Link Analytics: In the link analytics section, select the “Mute” option to silence click rage or dead clicks for that element across the entire site.
Confirmation Pop-up: A pop-up will appear, showing the CSS selector for that element and confirming that it will be muted/unmuted sitewide.
Confirm Changes in Website Settings: Once muted, the CSS selector of the element will automatically update in the Website Settings muting section, providing a centralized place to view all muted elements.
Note: Only Administrators and Account Owners can make changes; other users have read-only access
For Technical Users: Muting via CSS Selectors in Website Settings
Muting from Website Settings
Go to Website Settings: Start by navigating to your Website Settings
Locate the Mute Click-Rage and Dead Click Section: Find the section between Exclude & Whitelist and Advanced Settings
Add/Remove CSS Selectors: Click the 'Mute new element' button to add a CSS selector for any element you want to mute. The table will show all muted elements with the date and time of muting in your locale format. Once input, select which Friction Events you'd like to mute for the given element.
Review and Update: Any changes you make will apply across your entire site, and any elements added or removed will reflect immediately in both Session Replay and Heatmaps.
💡 Tip: If you’re not sure what a CSS selector is, click here for a detailed guide.
If you try to mute a selector that’s already muted, an error message will appear to avoid duplicate entries.
Note: This section is accessible only to Administrators, Custom Admins, and Account Owners. Other users can view muted elements but cannot make changes.
Important Notes
Site-Wide Muting: Muting an element’s click rage or dead clicks will apply across your entire website, not just the specific page or recording where the mute was initiated.
Non-Retroactive: Muting applies only to future data and will not impact or change existing recordings or friction scores.
No Impact on Friction Scores: Once muted, click rage and dead click events on the specified elements won’t affect your site’s friction score.
Visibility: Muted click rage or dead click events will only be visible on the playback timeline within Session Replay, allowing you to unmute them if necessary.
