For teachers: How to set or amend prices on your account

We believe that when it comes to putting a price on their services, teachers know best. This article will show you how to set/adjust your prices.

The information included relates specifically to lesson blocks - 1, 5, 10, 20 or 40 lessons. For more information on pricing related to Lesson Offers and Group lessons, please read our guide for prices and payments.

How to adjust lesson prices

When adjusting lesson prices, please first consider that the final price the student will pay is a culmination of your fee plus a platform fee. To read more about the calculation of platform fees, please read our article on platform fees.

If you are a published teacher i.e. your profile is 'live'

  • Login to your MusicTeachers dashboard

  • Go to settings and click price settings

  • Located within the box labelled price settings, click the button labelled edit

You have two options:

  • Set a fixed hourly fee - the amount input into the box labelled ‘Per 60 min’ will be applied pro-rata to the different lesson lengths

  • Charge different fees for different lesson lengths - you can individually tailor the price for different lesson durations

Check the appropriate box, input the lesson rate(s) and click save.

If you are a registered teacher i.e. your profile is not live:

  • Login to your MusicTeachers dashboard

  • Scroll down to the box labelled 'Price Settings' and press on the drop-down icon >

  • Input your standard take-home fee for 30 minutes and press the button labelled ‘Confirm and update’

How often can I change my prices?

You can change your prices whenever you need to, but we recommend that you consider the timing carefully as changes go into effect immediately.

When and why should I consider changing my prices?

We recommend you review your price structure at least once a year and consider if your price still reflects your level of skill and experience. Cost of living increases, extra skills, qualifications and experience are all factors you should consider.

What happens when I change my prices?

If one or more of your students have automatic renewal switched on, they will receive an email notification when you change your price if it affects their product. Let your students know 30 days in advance if you plan to change your prices so they are ready.

If none of your students have automatic renewal switched on, they are not notified of price changes. We still recommend that you let your students know in advance, allowing them to buy a new block of lessons before the new prices go into effect. Giving notice about price changes can be a way to make students recommit to their lessons.

If you do not have any active students, we suggest that you try different prices and see if you can find a “sweet spot” for your local area. Sometimes teachers choose to start with a price just below what they would normally charge to get the attention of new students. If you decide to follow this strategy, we recommend that it is only at the beginning of your career when looking to establish yourself as a teacher and get a critical mass of students fast.
